Cougar Boys Fall in Kell Classic
The Rector Cougars (5-10) let a chance to possibly tie the game, and head into overtime, by committing a turnover late in the game as Pangburn held on for a 61-58 win this past Wednesday at the Kell Classic in Swifton.
Easton Tracy gave Rector an early 2-0 lead with a coast to coast lay-up only to see the Tigers score the next eight points to take an 8-2 advantage. Sam Simmons hit a jumper for the Cougars, Pangburn scored inside, Max Ford got a basket inside for the Cougars as the Tigers got a score in the paint making it 12-6. Ford hit back to back three-pointers for Rector around a Pangburn jumper to make the score 14-12 Tigers with 2:57 left. The Tigers scored inside again as Ford converted an old-school three-point play to make the score 18-15 Pangburn at the end of one.
The Tigers hit one of two free throws to start the second quarter before Kirk Beshears and Tracy scored back-to-back baskets to tie the game at 19. Pangburn hit two free throws as Cody Ails drilled a three-pointer to give the Cougars a 22-21 lead. The Tigers went on a 10-1 run with Ford hitting one of two free throws and as a result the score 31-23 Pangburn with 3:15 left in the half. Trey Rodden hit a three-pointer for Rector as Simmons followed with a jumper for the Cougars to make the score 31-28 Pangburn. The Tigers hit one of two free throws before Ails drilled a three-pointer for Rector to make the score 32-31 Pangburn. The Tigers added two free throws to push their lead to 34-31 at the half.
Pangburn hit a jumper to start the third quarter scoring as Andrew Carter put back an offensive rebound for Rector to make the score 36-33 Tigers. Pangburn went on a 9-2 run with Beshears hitting two free throws for the Cougars making the score 45-35 Tigers with 4:26 left. Rector answered with a 9-2 run as Tracy canned a three-ball, Beshears scored inside, Simmons hit a jumper and Beshears hit two free throws to make the score 47-43 Tigers. Pangburn hit back to back baskets before Beshears hit two free throws for the Cougars to make the score 51-45 at the end of three.
The teams traded scores for most of the quarter as Ford hit two free throws for Rector, Pangburn hit a jumper, Beshears scored inside for the Cougars, the Tigers hit two free throws, Ails canned another three-pointer with Pangburn netting a three-pointer to make the score 58-52 Tigers with 2:40 left. Tracy and Beshears scored back to back baskets to make the score 58-56 Pangbrun. The Tigers hit two free throws, Ford went coast to coast for a Rector lay-up as Pangburn hit one to two free throws making the score 61-58 Pangburn. The Cougars called a time-out with 13 seconds left to draw up a final play. Rector put the ball in play but turned the ball over with two seconds left to give Pangburn the win.
Ford led Rector with 16 points as Beshears added 13. Ails and Tracy each scored 9 points with Simmons tossing in 6 points, Rodden netting 3 points and Carter chipping in 2 points.
