Lady 'Hounds Kell Runner-Ups
In a closely played game all night, Marmaduke (25-7) came up short as Hoxie posted a 58-50 win in the girls' final of the Kell Classic this past Saturday in Swifton.
Tabitha Hyten gave the Lady Greyhounds the early 3-0 lead with a three-pointer from the top of the key as Hoxie answered with a three-pointer to tie the game. Jordan Mays hit a jumper for Marmaduke and followed with an old-school three-point play to give the Lady Greyhounds an 8-3 lead with 3:55 left. The Lady Mustangs hit another three-pointer, Hyten netted a jumper in the lane for Marmaduke as Mays hit one of two free throws for the Lady Greyhounds to make the score 11-6 Marmaduke. Hoxie cut the lead to 11-10 with a three-ball and one of two free throws before the Lady Greyhounds got an inside basket from Natalie Lentz to make it 13-10 Marmaduke. Hoxie canned their fourth three-pointer of the quarter at the buzzer to make it 13-13 at the end of one.
Hoxie hit one of two free throws to take a 14-13 lead early in the second quarter as Marmaduke got an inside score from Mays and a three-pointer from Scout Weatherford to take an 18-14 lead. Hoxie stuck back an offensive rebound and hit two free throws, Natalie Shelton hit two free throws for Marmaduke as the Lady Mustangs added a three-pointer to make it 21-20 Hoxie with just over four minutes left in the half. Hyten and Lentz hit back to back three-pointers to give Marmaduke a 26-21 lead before Hoxie got another stick back basket to make it 26-23. Mays hit one of two free throws for the Lady Greyhounds to make it 27-23 Marmaduke at the half.
The Lady Mustangs netted a three-pointer to start the third quarter as Lentz scored inside for Marmaduke to make the score 29-23 Lady Greyhounds. Hoxie went on a 14-0 run over the next three minutes to take a 40-29 lead with 2:57 left in the quarter. Marmaduke answered with the next nine points as Weatherford drilled a three-pointer and Hyten added back to back three-pointers to make the score 40-38 Hoxie at the end of three.
Shelton opened the fourth quarter with a three-ball for the Lady Greyhounds to make it 41-40 Maramduke only to see Hoxie hit one of two free throws and a three-pointer to re-take the lead at 44-41. Hyten hit two free throws to make it 44-43 Hoxie before the Lady Mustangs scored the next six points to make it 50-43 Hoxie forcing Marmaduke to call a time-out with 2:40 left. Hoxie hit two free throws before Lentz hit two free throws and Weatherford canned a three-pointer from the left corner to make it 52-48 Lady Mustangs. Hoxie scored inside, Shelton scored down low for Marmaduke as Hoxie hit four free throws in the last half minute to make the final score 58-50 Lady Mustangs.
"We shot the ball on our free throws and threes but not very well on our twos. They are a lot longer than us and I think we drove in a couple times and made bad shot trying to shoot over them when me should have kicked the ball out," Marmaduke head coach Rick Smith said after the game. "They (Hoxie) are a good 3A team and just as good as any 2A team we've played and we were right there," Smith added.
Hyten led Marmaduke with 16 points as Mays, Lentz and Weatherford each scored nine points. Shelton added seven points for the Lady Greyhounds.
