Rector Junior Teams Eliminated in Conference Tourney
Both of the Rector Cougar junior high teams were eliminated in the first round of conference tournament play at Sloan-Hendrix Monday night. Their contests were part of a marathon first day at Imboden, with the semi-finals set for Thursday and the finals on Saturday.
This marks the first year of the "blended" conferences, which aligns both 1A and 2A schools. For postseason purposes many of the conferences included the same teams, while others chose to play just those in their regular conference. There is no option for the senior high teams, as they'll not play in a blended conferences due to regional and state seeding.
At Imboden Monday night, the Cougar junior boys drew Crowley's Ridge Academy in their first round game, and fell to the Falcons by a final of 33-26.
In other boy's first round action, the Marmaduke Junior Greyhounds ran past Ridgefield Christian 60-25, host Sloan-Hendrix beat Maynard 53-26 while top-seeded Hillcrest got a bye. In the second round on Thursday, Marmaduke will take on Sloan-Hendrix at 5:10 while Hillcrest and CRA will square off at 7:30. The boys final is set for 12:15 p.m. on Saturday.
The Lady Cougars drew Ridgefield Christian as their first round opponent Monday night, and fell by the slimmest of margins, 35-34. Top scorer for Rector was Ellie Ford with 12 while Michaela Rients was also in double figures with 10. Emma Higgins paced the Lady Warriors with 12 as they advance.
In the other first round game on Monday in the girls bracket, Hillcrest easily handled the Lady Tigers of Maynard 44-24. Meanwhile, the top-seeded Marmaduke Lady Greyhounds and the second-seeded Sloan-Hendrix girls team both received byes into the second round, and they'll be in action Thursday evening as well. The Sloan-Hendrix contest with Ridgefield Christian is set for 4 p.m. and the Marmaduke-Hillcrest girls contest will be played at 6:20. The girls final is set for 11 a.m. on Saturday as the Marmaduke girls squad will be looking to complete the sweep of the season.
