Cougars Come Up Short at State

The Rector Cougars ended their season in the first round of the 1A state tournament at Mt. Ida Monday afternoon, falling to Dermott 55-38.

The Cougars posted an exciting come-from-behind overtime victory over Ridgefield Christian Saturday in the regional tournament at Calico Rock to advance as the third seed.

Junior Kirk Beshears paced the squad with 23 points Saturday in the win over the Warriors, as the Cougars took the win 66-64 in OT. In the earlier game the Bay girls beat Maynard in that third fourth place seeding game,later that day Norfork rolled in the girls championship game over Izard County. In the boys final it was ICC over Bay in a mild upset.

The Marmaduke Lady Greyhounds fell to Earle in the regional championship game at Carlisle, and both get a bye to the quarterfinals of the state 2A tourney at Quitman. The Marmaduke girls will play the winner of the Blevins-Pangburn contest in the 7 p.m. game on Friday. The winner will take on Spring Hill or the winner of the Hector-Brinkley game in the semi's at 5 p.m. on Saturday, with the championship game played the following week at Hot Springs.

Earle and Clarendon got byes in the boy's bracket, with EPC taking on Foreman and Marked Tree meeting England in first round games on Wednesday.
