Mary A. Gordon
Mary A. Gordon, 89, of Piggott, Ark., passed away at 9:26 a.m. on Wednesday, February 22, 2017. She died in Kokomo, Ind., where she has resided since June of 2013. Mary was born on June 7, 1927, and was the daughter of the late Ezra and Edna (Morrow) Gordon. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters and three brothers.
Mary taught at various locations in the beginning, but spent most of her 42 year career in the Piggott Elementary school system, teaching the second and third grade. It wasn't unusual to be talking to someone in the Piggott area who would tell a story about having "Miss Mary" as their teacher.
Mary was a member of the Wright's Chapel Methodist Church in Piggott, and looked forward to church services and then a chance to meet with friends and enjoy lunch afterwards. When Mary became unable to care for herself she moved to Kokomo, where she was cared for by her niece, Mary (Burns) Rethlake. She enjoyed many holidays and birthday parties with her nieces and nephews, and as the family grew became known as "GG Mary", which was short for great-great Aunt Mary. She will be missed by many.
Friends may visit with the family from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday, Feb. 24, at Shirley and Stout Funeral Home and Crematory, 1315 West Lincoln Road, Kokomo. Messages of condolence may be left online at www.shirleyandstout.com
Local services will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 26, 2017 in the chapel of Hoggard Sons Funeral Home, in Piggott. Burial will follow in Mars Hill Cemetery, located south of Crockett. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 1 to 3 p.m., prior to services, Sunday at the funeral home.
