Lady 'Hounds Runner-Ups in Regional
Marmaduke (32-10) didn't have any luck in slowing down the offense of the Earle Lady Bulldogs as they were handed a 53-21 loss in the championship game of the Class 2A North Regional Tournament this past Saturday in Carlisle.
The Lady Bulldogs scored the first 16 points of the game before Marmaduke got a running jumper from Natalie Shelton to make it 16-2 Earle with 3:30 left in the opening quarter. Jordan Mays hit a jumper for the Lady Greyhounds, the Lady Bulldogs got a stick back basket, Mays hit one of two free throws for Marmaduke as Earle hit one of two free throws to make the score 19-5 Lady Bulldogs at the end of one.
Natalie Lentz got a steal and lay-up for Marmaduke to open the second quarter scoring before Earle got back to back baskets to make it 23-7 Lady Bulldogs. Lentz hit two free throws after Earle was issued a technical foul as the Lady Bulldogs canned a a three-pointer to make it 26-12 Earle. Mays hit one of two free throws for Marmaduke only to see Earle get an inside basket and a conventional three-point play to make it 31-13 with 2:14 left. Neither team was able to score over the last two minutes of the quarter.
Earle scored the first 11 points of the third quarter before Lentz scored in the paint for the Lady Greyhounds to make it 42-15 Lady Bulldogs with 4:04 left. Earle got a basket inside, Scout Weatherford hit a jumper in the lane for Marmaduke, the Lady Bulldogs hit one of two free throws as Reesa Hampton hit three of four free throws on back to back trips to the foul line for the Lady Greyhounds to make the score 45-20 at the end of three.
The Lady Bulldogs hit two free throws and added a score down low before Johnna Rae Baine hit one of two free throws for Marmaduke to make the score 49-21 Earle. The Lady Bulldogs hit one of two free throws and added a three-pointer to set the final score at 53-21 Earle.
"We are not as deep as we have been and we are not equipped to play back to back nights," Marmaduke head coach Rick Smith said after the game. "We didn't any breaks tonight so we decided to rest the starters and get ready for the state tournament," Smith added.
Lentz led Marmaduke in scoring with six points as Shelton finished with five points. Mays tossed in four points, Hampton netted three points, Weatherford scored two points as Baine chipped in one point.
Marmaduke got to the title game with a 63-51 win over McCrory in the opener as Shelton led three players in double figures with 25 points. Mays scored 16 points as Lentz tossed in 13 points. Hampton added five points as Baine finished with four points. The Lady Greyhounds came back in the semi-finals and beat host Carlisle 62-44. Lentz led in scoring with 18 points as Weatherford and Shelton had 15 and 13 points respectively. Hampton netted nine points as Mays added seven points.
Marmaduke will open Class 2A State Tournament play on Friday at 7 p.m. in Quitman.
