High School Softball Season Set
Area softball teams have gotten their seasons underway, as the weather has permitted, across Northeast Arkansas.
The Piggott Lady Mohawk softball squad was scheduled to kick-off the 2017 campaign Tuesday afternoon at Cave City, but as of press time it was unclear if the weather and field conditions would cooperate. This year former assistant coach Melissa Hopkins takes over the program, and she will be assisted by volunteer coach Alan Vaughn with additional assistance from Tom Powell.
After making a deep run into the 3A state tourney last year, the team will return a good core of starters and will look to compete for another postseason run.
This year there are three seniors on the roster, including Grayson Murray, Sophie Adams and McCaleh Foulk. They'll be joined by juniors Ally Kilbreath, Lexi Herren and Hannah Powell; sophomores Alexi Russell, Ashley Jeffries, Harley Earnheart and Hayley Springsteen along with freshmen Abby Dutka, Ashlyn Roberts, Carlie Vancil, Jamara Ball, Kaylee Smith, Madison Rahn and Madison Hanks.
In addition to Tuesday's game with Cave City, the Tribe was scheduled to host Pocahontas on Thursday, but the Lady Redskins will be playing for a state basketball title this weekend, so that game will be rescheduled. The Mohawks are also scheduled to host Corning on Friday, but field conditions will determine whether that game is played or not.
The Lady Mohawks are scheduled to play in a tournament at Malden Saturday, and have games scheduled at Melbourne and Walnut Ridge next Tuesday and Thursday, before competing in the Bearcat Blast at Jonesboro on Friday and Saturday, March 17 and 18. They're also slated to host Highland at Independence Park on Monday, March 20. The squad will then remain idle until March 28, when they're scheduled to visit Hoxie.
The regular season runs through April 21, with the district tournament set for April 27 to 29 in Corning; the regional tournament May 4 to 6 at Manila and the state tournament being played May 11 to 13 at Harrison.

The squad was scheduled to begin this year's campaign on Tuesday afternoon at Osceola, although a final score and stats were not available as of press time.
The girls are slated to host Marked Tree on Thursday, and will host East Poinsett County Friday, weather permitting. They're slated to play host to the Maynard Lady Tigers next Monday, March 13, and will then be idle through spring break.
They'll resume play on Monday, March 27, at Rector; will visit Sloan-Hendrix on Tuesday, March 28, and will travel to Trumann to take on the Lady Wildcats on Thursday, March 30.
