Lady 'Hounds End Season in State Tourney

In a back and forth battle which lasted all night, Pangburn got the final blow in as the Lady Tigers downed Marmaduke (32-11) 55-50 in quarter-finals action of the Class 2A state baskeball tournmaent this past Friday at Quitman.

Jodan Mays opened the scoring with a coast-to-coast to lay-up before Pangburn scored back-to-back baskets to make it 4-2 Lady Tigers. Mays hit two free throws as Natalie Lentz scored inside for the Lady Greyhounds only to see Pangburn get back-to-back scores again making the score 8-6 Lady Tigers with 2:06 left. Marmaduke scored the next nine points as Reesa Hampton hit one of two free throws, Mays and Hampton canned back to back three-pointers and Hampton scored inside to make the score 15-8 Lady Greyhounds. Pangburn added a field goal late in the frame to make it 15-10 after one.

The Lady Tigers scored the first eight points of the second quarter to go up 18-15 before Scout Weatherford drilled a three-ball for Marmaduke to tie the game at 18 with 3:50 left in the first half. Pangburn hit a jumper, Mays hit two of three free throws after being fouled attempting a three-pointer for the Lady Greyhounds before the Lady Tigers got a stick back, hit one of two free throws and stuck back an offensive rebound to make the score 25-20 Pangburn. Shelton canned a three-pointer with two seconds left making it 25-23 Lady Tigers at the half.

Marmaduke got a coast-to-coast lay-up from Shelton and back-to-back three-pointers from Weatherford and Mays to make the score 31-25 Lady Greyhounds early in the thrid quarter. Pangburn hit one of two free throws, Hampton drilled a three-ball for Marmaduke, and the Lady Tigers score inside as Lentz scored off the fast break for Marmaduke to make the score 36-28 Lady Greyhounds with 4:36 left. The Lady Tigers scored inside, Mays got a basket down low for Marmaduke before Pangburn scored the last sixt points of the quarter making it 38-36 Lady Greyhounds at the end of three.

Shelton scored inside for Marmaduke to start the fourth quarter scoring as Pangburn scored inside and then canned a three-pointer to make it 41-40 Lady Tigers. Shelton scored inside for Marmaduke, Pangburn hit two free throws, Shelton hit a jumper for the Lady Greyhounds as the Lady Tigers hit two free throws to make it 45-44 Pangburn with 3:19 left. Shelton hit a jumper in the lane for Marmaduke only to see the Lady Tigers go on a nine point run, to go up 54-46. Shelton got back-to-back lay-ups for the Lady Greyhounds with Pangburn adding two free throws with seven seconds left to set the final score at 55-50 Lady Tigers.

"I was proud of my team. I told them they played hard against a good team tonight," Marmaduke head coach Rick Smith said after the game. "Their seniors played good as did our seniors. It was like a heavyweight fight, they got the last blow in tonight," Smith added.

Shelton led Marmaduke in scoring with 17 points (12 in the fourth quarter) as Mays added 14 points. Hampton and Weatherford scored nine and six points respectively with Lentz finishing with four points.
