Rector Student Takes First in ASU Math Competition
Arkansas State University's Mathematics and Statistics Department, along with the Arkansas Council of Teachers of Mathematics, hosted the 39th annual Northeast Arkansas Regional Math Contest last week. Bringing home first place in the course of Algebra I was Jacob Holmes, a student at Rector High School.
Sixteen schools throughout the region were represented by 174 students in the competition. The students enrolled in any one of the following courses -- Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Trig/Pre-Calculus, Calculus, or Statistics -- and competed for top honors.
In Algebra I Holmes finished in first place, while second went to Hyunseo Seok of Valley View Junior High and third was Sameer Mittal of KIPP Blytheville Collegiate High School.
The other regional winners included Kayla Wilcox of Nettleton High School for Geometry; Fiona Fu of Jonesboro High School for Algebra II; Minjeong Seok of Arkansas School of Math, Science and Arts in Pre-Calculus; Olivia Langner of Brookland High School in Calculus and Aly Nichols of Nettleton High School for Statistics.
Holmes, along with the other students who placed first, second or third have been invited to participate in the State Math Contest, set for April 22, in Conway, where students will compete for scholarships of up to $600.
