PHS Weightlifting Team Takes Second in 3A at State Meet
The Piggott Mohawk weightlifting team traveled to Alma late last week to take part in the state weight meet at Alma High School. Competing on Saturday, the Tribe made a strong showing among the schools in attendance—bringing home second place honors in 3A.
The competition consisted of two events, with lifters competing in their appropriate weight class in both the bench press and power clean, with consideration afforded based on their body weight. Schools of all classes were represented, with championships handed out in each classification.
The Mohawks had contestants in each of the weight groups, with junior Nate Mallard notching the top finish with a fourth in the 259 pound weight division. Meanwhile, fellow junior Cade Harrell finished in fifth in the 220 pound class; senior Justin Goding was fifth in the 132 pound class and senior Bret Fuller also had a top-10 finish, as he was ninth in the 198 pound division.
Braden Ralph lifted 290 pounds in the 123 pound weight class, good enough for 18th. Justin Goding competed in the 132 pound class, lifting 390 pounds for his fifth place finish. Corbin Midkiff placed 30th in the 148 pound class with a combined weight of 370 and Gunner Shaw took 15th in the 165 pound class with 460 pounds.
John Jones lifted 490 pounds in the 181 pound class, good enough for 18th, and Fuller lifted a total of 550 pounds for his ninth place finish in the 198 pound class. Harrell lifted 570 pounds to earn his fifth place finish in the 220 pound class and Lane Buchanan was 24th in the 242 pound class with a total of 490 pounds. Mallard lifted 580 pounds to earn the fourth place finish in the 259 pound weight clas and Devin Riley finished 28th in the heavyweight division with a combined total of 500 pounds.
The Mohawk lifters totaled 4,690 pounds, second in the 3A division only to Junction City with 4,830.
Overall top honors went to Greenwood High School from the 6A/7A division with 5,095 pounds, over 100 pounds better than second place Benton.
The host Alma team took first in 5A with 4,790 combined pounds, as they beat Farmington by some 210 pounds. Booneville was first in 4A with a total of 4,980 pounds, just 40 pounds more than the Trumann Wildcats.
Junction City edged the Tribe 4,830 to 4,690 to take first in 3A, with Benton Harmony Grove taking third with 4,570 pounds. In class 2A the top honors went to Rison (4,740), Mt Ida (4,345) and Marked Tree was third (4,270) ahead of Hampton and Salem.
A total of 50 teams recorded weights in the state meet.
