Lady 'Hounds Beat MT Behind Henry's One-Hitter

Sammi Henry allowed only one hit as the Lady Greyhounds gave her plenty of run support in a 10-0 win over Marked Tree Monday in Marked Tree. Both MHS teams will be in action today, Thursday, April 27, in district tournament play.

Jordan Mays led off for Marmaduke with a single as Natalie Lentz followed with a walk. Sammi Henry singled to load the bases before April Kennedy’s bunt single scored Mays making it 1-0 Lady Greyhounds. Natalie Shelton was hit by a pitch that scored Lentz as Bailey Bridges fielder’s choice grounder plated Henry to make the score 3-0 Marmaduke. Rachel Martin struck out as Angel Johnson grounded out for the third out. Ally Byers popped out leading off or Marked Tree in the bottom half as Brittany Pharis followed with a fly out to center field. Harley Daniels reached on an error only to be left stranded when Bailey Dunn struck out as the score stayed 3-0 Marmaduke. Alyssa Henry struck out as she led off the top of the second inning for the Lady Greyhounds as Mays was hit by a pitch. Lentz laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Mays to second before Henry struck out for out three. Cam Willoughby singled leading off the bottom of the second inning before advancing to second as Taylor Hannah reached on a fielder’s choice. Three MT batters struck out to end the inning with the Lady Greyhounds still leading 3-0.

Marmaduke plated six runs in the top of third as Kennedy led off with a bunt single, Shelton walked before Bridges bunted for a hit to load the bases. Kennedy scored on a wild pitch as Martin singled to score Shelton making it 5-0 Marmaduke. Johnson’s ground out scored Bridges as Martin would score on a wild pitch to make the score 7-0. Henry singled before Mays tripled to bring her in and move to 8-0. Lentz’ ground ball out brought in Mays making it 9-0 before Henry popped out for third out. The Lady Indians went three up and three down as Byers popped out, Pharis struck out and Daniels popped out ending the third inning. Kennedy singled and stole second base as Shelton was hit by a pitch. A double steal moved the runners up a base before Bridges’ ground out scored Kennedy making it 10-0 Lady Greyhounds. Martin and Johnson both struck out leaving Shelton on base. Dunn grounded out leading off the bottom of inning for Marked Tree as Willoughby was hit by a pitch. Hannah popped out and Rotscheid grounded out to end the fourth inning.

The Lady Greyhounds went down in order in the top of the fifth as did Marked Tree in the bottom of the inning to preserve the win by a final of 10-0.

Kennedy had three hits, two runs scored, an RBI and two stolen bases to lead the Lady Greyhounds as Jordan Mays had two hits, two runs scored and a RBI. Bridges had a hit, a run scored, two RBIs and a stolen base, Martin had a hit, a run scored and a RBI, Sammi and Alyssa Henry both had a hit and a run scored, Shelton had a run scored, a RBI and a stolen base, Lentz had a run scored and a RBI as Johnson had a RBI.

Both the Lady Greyhounds and the Greyhound baseball squad will be in action at noon today at Marked Tree in their district tournament. And, both will be facing the other Greyhounds in the bracket, as they'll take on Sloan-Hendrix.

Based on the weather forecast for the coming days, organizers hoped to get the brackets completed on Friday.
