Lady 'Hounds District Runner-Ups

Marmaduke (24-4) ran into a hot Salem team falling 7-3 in the 2A-2 district finals this past Friday in Marked Tree.

Salem got two runners on only to leave them stranded when Sammi Henry induced a ground ball for the third out. Jordan Mays singled leading off for Marmaduke and was tagged out after she slid past second base on her steal. Natalie Lentz tripled and scored on a single by Sammi Henry to make it 1-0 Marmaduke. April Kennedy popped out and Bailey Bridges flew out to end the first inning. Salem sent eight batters to plate in the top of the second inning scoring four runs to go up 4-1. Natalie Shelton got a lead-off walk for Marmaduke only to see Rachel Martin, Alyssa Henry and Angel Johnson all pop out leaving Shelton on base with score 1-0 after two innings.

Salem took advantage of a Marmaduke error to plate a run in the top of the third inning to make the score 5-1. Jordan Mays popped out leading off the bottom of the third before Lentz went struck out looking. Sammi Henry drew a walk as Kennedy popped out to end the inning. Salem went down in order in the top of the fourth inning as Bridges grounded out leading off the bottom half for Marmaduke. Shelton reached on an error only to see Martin line out and Alyssa Henry strike out keeping the score 5-1 Salem.

Salem tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth inning to push their lead to 7-1. Johnson led off for Marmaduke with a ground out followed by Jordan Mays with a fly out. Lentz reached second on an error before scoring on a single by Sammi Henry making it 7-2 Salem. Kennedy popped out for third out. Salem got two runners with one out before two fielder’s choice outs got Marmaduke out of the top half of the sixth. Bridges flew out leading off for Marmaduke before Shelton singled. Martin struck out looking as Alyssa Henry’s grounder forced Shelton at second to keep the score 7-2 Salem.

Salem got their lead-off batter on before Sammi Henry got a pop out and two fly outs. Johnson grounded out leading off the bottom of the seventh for Marmaduke before Jordan Mays reached third base on an error. Jordan Mays took a tumble around second before getting to third and was replaced by Maggie Mays. Maggie Mays scored on Lentz’s ground out before Sammi Henry lined out ending the game giving Salem the title.

Sammi Henry had two hits and two RBIs to lead Marmaduke at the plate with Lentz finishing with a hit, two runs scored and a RBI. Jordan Mays had a hit and a stolen base, Shelton had a hit as Maggie Mays scored a run.

Sammi Henry took the loss in the circle as she pitched all seven innings giving up seven runs on 12 hits with four strikeouts.

Marmaduke got to the title game with an opening round 13-0 win over Sloan-Hendrix as Sammi Henry threw a no-hitter. Lentz had three hits, two runs scored and three RBIs, Jordan Mays had three hits, four runs score and a RBI as Sammi Henry had two hits, three RBIs and a run scored.

Sammi Henry came back with a three-hit 11 strikeout performance in a 6-0 win over Cotter in the semi-finals. Bridges had two hits, a run scored and a RBI to lead Marmaduke at the plate as Shelton added a hit, a run scored and a RBI.

Marmaduke will play their first game in the 2A North Regional tournament at 5:30 p.m. this Friday, May 5, as they take on the host team at Palestine-Wheatley. The game had originally been scheduled for Thursday, but all regional play was postponed one day by the Arkansas Activities Association.
