Baseball Cougars Fall in District Semi

Rector could only muster three hits on the day as the Cougars were handed a 6-1 loss at the hands of the Armorel Tigers this past Thursday in semi-final action of the 1A-3 East district tournament in Bay.

Armorel scored a run in the top of the first inning to take the early 1-0 lead. Rector went three up three down in the bottom half of the inning as Evan Dooley grounded out, Cade Watson flew out and Hunter McNeely grounded out to keep the score 1-0 Tigers. Armorel added on a run in the top of the second on a solo homerun to make the score 2-0. Kirk Beshears flew out leading off the bottom of the second inning before Sam Simmons got to second on an Armorel error. Cody Ails was hit by a pitch as Nic Mesa singled to score Simmons making it 2-1 Tigers. Conly Lockhart flew out followed by Shannon Patterson striking out to end the inning.

Armorel got two runners on in the top of the third before Hunter McNeely got a strikeout for the third out. Dooley grounded out leading off the bottom of third for Rector as Watson and McNeely both struck out keeping the score 2-1 Armorel. The Tigers tacked on another run in the top of third to push their lead to 3-1. Beshears singled for the Cougars leading off the bottom half before Simmons struck out. Ails grounded out moving Beshears to second base as Mesa walked before Lockhart popped out to end the inning.

The Tigers took advantage of a Rector error to plate another run in the top of the fifth making the score 4-1 Armorel. Patterson walked leading off the bottom of the fifth for the Cougars before Dooley grounded out. Watson reached on an error that moved Patterson to third. Watson was picked off at first before McNeely flew out to end the inning. Armorel got another homerun in the top of the sixth to make the score 5-1 Tigers. Beshears looked at strike three leading off the bottom half as Simmons grounded out. Ails singled only to see Mesa pop out to end the inning.

Armorel tacked on another run in the top of the seventh inning making the score 6-1 Tigers. Lockhart grounded out leading off for the Cougars before Patterson was hit by a pitch. Dooley grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the game with Armorel winning 6-1.

Mesa had a hit and a RBI to lead Rector at the plate as Beshears and Ails added a hit each. Simmons scored the Cougars only run.

McNeely took the loss for Rector as he pitched six innings giving up five runs on seven hits while walking four, striking out five and hitting one batter. Ails pitched one inning as he gave up one run on two hits with two strikeouts.

The Cougars came back later in the day and defeated Ridgefield Christian School 19-5 in the third place game as Simmons smashed two homeruns and a double to drive in six runs on the day. Beshears added four hits, scored four runs and a RBI, Ails had two hits, two runs scored and two RBIs, Dooley had two hits, a run scored and two RBIs, Mesa had a hit, two runs scored and a RBI, Lockhart had two hits, a run scored and a RBI as Simmons and Watson scored three and two runs respectively.

Ails got the win in relief as he gave up one run on four this with two walks and two strikeouts in three and one thirds innings of work. Mesa started for Rector as he gave up four runs on one hit with two walks and two strikeouts with two hit batters in one and two thirds innings of work.

Rector will open regional play against Viola at 12:30 p.m. this Friday, May 4, in Armorel. The game was originally scheduled for Thursday, but all first round games were postponed by the AAA. Semi finals will be played Saturday with the finals and third-fourth place seeding game Monday.
