Rector Softball Cougars Fall to Bay in District
Rector (8-6) kept it close for the first three innings before Bay (8-11) had two big innings to hand the Lady Cougars an 11-2 loss in one semi-final game of the 1A-3 East district softball tournament this past Monday in Bay.
Jessie Martin led off with a single for Bay as Sophia Rottinghaus popped out. Mallory Hartley drew a walk before Martin and Hartley scored on a double by AnnMarie Wood to make it 2-0 Bay. Kira Durecki grounded out and Bailee Kirby struck out for out three. Colbie Robinson and Emma Hobbs both struck out for the first two outs for Rector in the bottom half as Sawyer Hendrix had an infield single. Mylesa Gant grounded out to end the inning with the score 2-0 Bay. The Lady ‘Jackets went down in order in the top of the second as Jordan Taylor grounded out, Adela Herrera struck out and Beth Riga popped out. The Lady Cougars also went down in order in their half of the inning as Maddie Hobbs and Matison Dean both grounded out before Cheyenne Rients struck out as the score stayed 2-0 Bay.
The Lady Yellowjackets again went down in order as Martin grounded out leading off followed by Rottinghaus popping out. Kirby grounded out for the third out. Rector also went down in order in the bottom half as Cheyanne Ellis and Mykayla Rients both struck out and Robinson grounded out keeping the score 2-0 Bay. The Lady ‘Jackets plated four runs in the top of the fourth as Wood walked, Durecki struck out before Kirby and Taylor both walked to load the bases. Herrera looked at strike three, Riga reached on an error that allowed Wood to score making it 3-0 Bay. Martin singled to score Kirby as Taylor and Riga both scored when the ball got past the outfielder to make the score 6-0 Lady Yellowjackets. Rottinghaus popped out for out three. Emma Hobbs singled leading off the bottom of the fourth for Rector before stealing second base. Hendrix and Gant both struck out as Emma Hobbs moved to third on a passed ball. Maddie Hobbs brought Emma Hobbs home with a single to make the score 6-1 Bay. Dean coaxed a two-out walk only to see Cheyenne Rients strike out looking to end the inning.
Bay went three up three down in the top of the fifth as Hartley lined out, Wood grounded out and Durecki looked at strike three. Ellis reached on an error for the Lady Cougars leading off the bottom of the fifth as Cheyenne Rients struck out. Robinson reached on a fielder’s choice that forced Ellis at second base. Robinson stole second base, Emma Hobbs legged out an infield single as Hendrix singled to score Robinson to make the score 6-2 Bay. Gant grounded out ending the inning. Bay plated five runs in the top of the sixth inning as Kirby lead off with a single as Taylor followed with a single with Kirby scoring on an errant throw to make it 7-2. Herrera reached on a fielder’s choice as Taylor raced home on another error by Rector making it 8-2. Riga’s sacrifice bunt moved Herrera to third as Martin popped out. Herrera scored on a passed ball to make it 9-2 before Rottinghaus and Hartley both walked. The duo moved up a base on another passed ball before scoring on a single by Wood to make the score 11-2 Bay. Durecki popped out for the third out. Maddie Hobbs reached on an error leading off the bottom half of the inning for Rector only to be left there as Dean struck out, Cheyenne Rients grounded out and Ellis struck to end the sixth inning.
Kirby had an infield single leading off the seventh for Bay as Taylor reached on a dropped pop up that go Kirby tagged out. Herrera was hit by a pitch, Riga’s ground ball got Taylor tagged out before Martin grounded out for out three to keep the score 11-2 Bay. Makayla Rients walked leading off the bottom half for Rector before Robinson reached on an error with Makayla Rients scoring to make it 11-3. Emma Hobbs reached on an error that allowed Robinson to score to make it 11-4 Bay. Hendrix and Gant both struck out as Maddie Hobbs singled to score Emma Hobbs making the score 11-5 Lady ‘Jackets. Dean got a two-out single before Cheyenne Rients grounded out to give Bay the 11-5 win.
Emma Hobbs led Rector at the plate with two hits, two runs scored and a stolen base as Maddie Hobbs had two hits and two RBIs. Hendrix finished with two hits, a RBI and a stolen base, Robinson had two runs scored and a stolen base, Dean had a hit as Makayla Rients scored a run for the Lady Cougars.
Maddie Hobbs took the loss in the circle as she pitched a complete giving up 11 runs on eight hits with six walks, five strikeouts and one hit batter.
Wood had two hits, a run scored and three RBIs to lead Bay with Kirby adding two hits and two runs scored. Martin had two hits, a run scored and a RBI, Taylor had a hit and two runs scored, Hartley had two runs scored with Rottinghaus, Herrera and Riga all scoring a run.
Rottinghaus got the win as she pitched six innings while giving up five runs on seven hits with two walks and 13 strikeouts.
Rector got a forfeit from Maynard in the consolation game that gave the Lady Cougars the third-seed in the 1A-2 regional tournament that starts Friday in Armorel. Rector will play Viola in the first round at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday with the semi-finals on Saturday and the finals and third-fourth place seeding game on Monday.
