Memorial Day will be marked across the nation this coming weekend, with a variety of observances and homecoming services scheduled.

The annual Memorial Day service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Woodland Heights Cemetery in Rector. The service will be under the direction of the local VFW post. This year's speaker will be former Army Ranger, and current Baptist preacher, Shane Fore. The event will also include the annual Woodland Heights Cemetery Commission report.

Organizers also noted volunteers are needed to place flags on the graves of veterans in preparation for the observance. Those wanted to help will be working under the direction of Betty Essman, and are asked to meet at the cemetery at 7 a.m. on Thursday.

The Piggott Cemetery Association will host their annual wreath ceremony, and business meeting, beginning at 2 p.m. Sunday at the cemetery. The schedule includes the annual update of finances, election of a new board member and the wreath ceremony under the direction of the local VFW and American Legion posts. This year's featured speaker will be Piggott Mayor Jim Poole.

In keeping with a recent tradition, members of the Mohawk football team volunteered their time to distribute the flags on the graves of veterans in the Piggott Cemetery. They were busy distributing the flags Thursday morning.

Additional homecoming services, and cemetery business meetings, are scheduled at various locations in the region. A listing of those submitted to the CCTD may be found on page five of this week's print edition.
