Lady Mohawk Volleyball Season Underway
The Piggott Lady Mohawk volleyball teams began regular season play Monday night, travelling to Hoxie and splitting with the Lady Mustangs. The junior girls notched the win in two straight in their match, while the senior squad fell in three to their hosts.
This marks the start of the second season under Coach Codie Lancaster, who is assisted by Melissa Hopkins.
The afternoon at Hoxie actually began with a rare seventh grade match with the Lady Mustangs squeaking out a 26-24 win over the Tribe. In the junior B contest it was also a tight match going to the host squad, as they took the set 25-23.
The junior girls got the first win of the season for the program in their match, taking it 26-25 and 25-20.
Claire Bellers led the way with eight kills, five aces and an 81 percent passing performance. Meanwhile, Maddie Reeves had five kills, three digs and a 75 percent passing performance; Jacy Featherston had three kills and two aces; Macey Williams had 14 assists and three digs whle Annalee Massey finished with three kills in the win.
Rounding out the junior high roster are Emma Langley, Emma Hooten, Taylor Smart, Alyssa Manor, Haley Seal, Emma Shaw, Summer Pollard, Elise Gossett, Kalaya Cole, Callie Henson and Emma Riddle.
Meanwhile, the seventh grade players also includes MaKenzie Grider, Tamia Davis, Ryleigh Lathum, Dixie Book, Alyssa Blair and Aurora Harmon.
In the nightcap the senior girls fell in straight sets to the Lady Mustangs, 8-25, 15-25 and 5-25.
We just didn't play well, Lancaster said later. I'd like to think it's just rust, but we should be getting the rust off by now. We just didn't play well.
Jordan Tate had a strong game at the net with four kills, while Madison Rahn had 12 assists to her credit.
Also on the senior roster this year are Lexi Herren, Carlie Vancil, Harley Earnheart, Hannah Powell, Emily Massey, Hayley Springsteen, Emily Trosper, Taylor Seal and Ally Kilbreath.
The seventh grade and junior teams hosted MacArthur Middle School in action Tuesday afternoon at PHS. All teams will be in action this Thursday, Aug. 24, as the Harrisburg Lady Hornets visit Piggott High. The seventh grade squad is slated to compete in a tourney at Brookland this Saturday, Aug. 26, and all teams will visit Pocahontas on Monday, Aug. 28. The following night, Tuesday, Aug. 29, the Tribe will host Brookland and on Thursday, Aug. 31, the Westside Lady Warriors will host the Mohawks in non-conference action at Jonesboro.
