PHS Tennis Squads Enjoy Success
The Mohawk tennis teams took part in a non-conference tri-match with Highland, Beebe and Nettleton Tuesday, Aug. 22, at Jonesboro. On the day they split with the Rebels and Raiders and swept the 5A Badgers. On Thursday they swept a pair from CRA.
The Lady Mohawks got a win from Emilee Seegraves in singles play against Highland, while Destini Chase, Brooke Roberts and Erin Dixon dropped their matches. In doubles play the Tribe was swept, with Georgina Bautista and Madison Pool dropping two while Shi Higdon and Maggie Williams and Alexis Russell and Candace Hackworth also fell in their doubles sets.
As for the boys team, they split 2-2 with last year's 4A state qualifiers. Both Brier Staples and Kaleb Chadwell fell in singles play, while the doubles teams of Josh Lyman and Carrington McDaniel and Cooper Harris and Michael Palmer rolled to wins.
The Tribe also competed with 5A state qualifier Nettleton, with the girls gaining a 3-3 split while the boys won 2-1.
Staples fell in his singles match for the boys team, while Lyman and McDaniel and Harris and Palmer continued to roll in doubles play. As for the girls, Seegraves and Chase took their singles matches, while Bautista and Pool fell in doubles play along with the teams of Roberts and Williams, Dixon and Higdon and Alexis Russell and Hackworth.
The Tribe swept the 5A state qualifiers from Beebe on the day, with the girls and boys both taking their sets 3-2. For the Lady Mohawks, Seegraves and Chase took their singles matches while Higdon fell in hers. In doubles play Bautista and Pool fell while Brooke Roberts and Williams won theirs.
For the boys, Chadwell split a pair of singles matches while Staples fell in his. But, the boys doubles effort continued to roll, with Lyman and McDaniel and Harris and Palmer both winning by wide margins.
Thursday the Mohawks hosted CRA at Jonesboro, sweeping the Falcons 5-2 and 9-0.
The girls team got singles wins from Seegraves, Chase, Bautista and Pool. Meanwhile, Ashley Grissom and Higdon won their match while the doubles teams of Brooke Roberts and Williams and Hackworth and Alexis Russell dropped theirs.
As for the boys team, they swept them in both singles and doubles play on the day. Singles winners included Lyman, McDaniel, Staples, Palmer, Harris and Chadwell. The doubles teams of Lyman and McDaniel; Harris and Palmer and Staples and Chadwell also recorded wins for the Tribe.
Coming off the CRA match the boys team stands at 3-0-1 while the girls squad is 2-1-1 on the season. They were slated to take on Marked Tree and Newport in a tri-match on Monday, and were slated to visit Paragould Tuesday—weather permitting. They'll complete a home-and-away set with the Rams this Thursday, Aug. 31. On Tuesday, Sept. 5, the girls team is scheduled to host Caruthersville.
