Rector Labor Day Picnic at Hand
Anticipation continues to grow for the upcoming 76th annual Rector Labor Day Picnic. As in years past, the picnic will include musical talents, carnival rides, beauty pageants and food from Friday until Monday. The picnic was first held in 1941, and in the years since has provided funds for maintenance for Rector's beautiful Woodland Heights Cemetery located north of town.
Festivities will kick off at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 1, with the annual Rector Hall of Fame golf tournament, which is held as a memorial to Dr. Owen H. Clopton. Registration begins at 9 a.m. that day at the Kennett Country Club. The entry fee is $200 per team, with the field limited to 18 teams. The ever-popular Ultimate Oldies Show will perform songs from the 50s and 60s. Showtime is set for 7 p.m. Reserved tickets are $20 and general admission is $15. All proceeds from the annual concert are earmarked for continued improvements to the community center.
Saturday's festivities begin at 8 a.m. with the annual Labor Day 5K, with runners and walkers lining up in front of the Rector High School. Registration is $25 per participant and registration will begin at 6:30 a.m. on race day. The 5K is sponsored by Rector High School Helping Hands and funds raised support projects funded by the foundation. Later in the day the Rector High School Helping Hands Sports Hall of Fame Luncheon will be held. The induction ceremony will be held immediately after the annual RHSSHOF catered luncheon set for noon on Saturday, Sept. 2, at the RHS gymnasium. Those attending are reminded to make plans to arrive between 11:30 a.m. and noon and visit with the inductees and with friends from the past.
Tickets for the luncheon are $15 per adult; $7.50 for ages six to 14 and children aged five and under are free.
Also on Saturday, Rector Downtown Central will hold the annual Ice Cream Social. The event will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Rector Downtown Park. This year's entertainment will be Karaoke, under the direction of Robert Layer.
Organizers are seeking contestants for the very popular pageants held Sunday, Sept. 3, and Monday, Sept. 4.
Sunday will feature the first four of the annual beauty pageants.

The Ms. Rector pageant will be held at 8 p.m. Sunday for women 22 years-old and older, married or single. This pageant is open to everyone and formal dress is required. Entry fee is $25. The streets of Rector will be lined with spectators for the annual parade, set to begin at 9 a.m. Monday, Sept.4, at the corner of Third and Main Streets. Afterward, around 9:55 political speeches will be featured at the grandstand. Those scheduled to be on hand include Gov. Asa Hutchinson, Congressman Rick Crawford, State Treasurer Dennis Milligan, State Sen. Blake Johnson, State Rep. Joe Jett, Pros. Atty. Scott Ellington, District 17 Circuit Judge Dan Stidham, Clay County Judge Mike Patterson, candidate for secretary of state John Thurston and candidate for commissioner of state lands Tommy Land.
