High School Football Scores, Week One

The high school football season is now underway across Northeast Arkansas, with a full slate of games in the past week. The Rector Cougar senior squad began their campaign Tuesday evening, dropping a tough 27-20 decision at Palestine-Wheatley. Thursday night the Piggott Junior Mohawks hosted the Junior Cougars, and posted a 36-6 win at Parker Field.

Friday night the Mohawks hosted 2A perennial favorites Hazen, and squeezed out a 24-14 victory despite a number of miscues.

Checking other regional scores of note—the Corning Bobcats were pounded by Melbourne 46-14; Marked Tree beat Clarendon 33-15; Walnut Ridge got by Poyen 26-22; EPC beat up on Marianna 44-6; Salem whipped Mt. View 40-18; Trumann downed Hoxie 35-20; Westside spoiled Manila's opener with a 36-8 decision; Newport got by Gosnell 15-8; Blytheville downed Osceola 29-21; Rivercrest thumped Paragould 41-6 and Harrisburg beat Cross County in a 4A-2A contest 12-6.

As for the Mohawk's next opponents, the Portageville Bulldogs, they were hammered by the Dexter Bearcats 42-14.

The junior Cougars, junior Mohawks and Cougars all have next week off, while the Mohawks will make the trip to Portageville to take on the Bulldogs.
