Burns Edges Champ for Piggott School Board Seat

Tuesday, September 19, 2017

Turnout was heavy for the annual school election for the Piggott District, with over 300 patrons casting ballots in the two-person race. This year's race pitted incumbent school board member Hope Burns against local businessman Steve Champ. When the votes were tallied Tuesday evening Burns had edged Champ 201 to 98.

Clay County Clerk Pat Poole reports there were a total 116 early ballots, with 78 for Burns and 38 for Champ. Meanwhile, 183 ballots were cast Tuesday with 123 for Burns and 60 for Champ.

This also marked the first time the new voter ID law was in effect, although only two provisional ballots were cast as a result.

With the re-election, Burns is now set to begin her third five year term on the Piggott Schools Board of Education. Rector School Board member Tony Lockhart was un-opposed as he sought a new term.
