Mohawk Tennis Splits Matches
The Piggott Mohawk tennis teams split conference matches with the Riverside Rebels and Harding Academy Wildcats last week, with the boys remaining undefeated on the season.
The girls squad fell to Harding Academy, a team which placed fifth in the state last year, 2-3 on the day. In singles play Emilee Seegraves beat Rachel Story, a state qualifier last year, 6-3, while Destini Chase fell to Maddie Lowery 4-6 for a split.
In doubles play the team of Brooke Roberts and Macey Williams beat Anna Goode and Emma Day 6-4; while Georgina Bautista and Madison Pool fell to Cally Moore and Audrey Laird 0-6 and Ashley Grissom and Erin Dixon dropped their match with Josie McGunnery and Rosella Lynn 1-6.
The girls squad also fell to Riverside, as Seegraves earned the only win of the day in the 1-4 decision. In her match, the talented senior beat Briley douglas 6-0, while Chase dropped the other singles match to Bailey Qualls 3-6.
In doubles play, Bautista and Pool fell to last year's state champs, Abby Brichell and Hattie Mulligan 0-6; Brooke Roberts and Williams fell to Carson Smith and Bailey Fisher (third in state last year in doubles) 1-6 while Shi Higdon and Alexis Russell fell to Alexis Boatman and Ashlynn Wright 1-6.
With the losses the girls team extends their season record to 5-3-2 overall.
The Mohawk boys team remained unbeaten on the year with a pair of 2-1 wins over the Rebels and Wildcats.
In action against Harding Academy, Kaleb Chadwell dropped his singles match with John Luke McGalliard 0-6 for the only loss of the set. In doubles play, Josh Lyman and Carrington McDaniel rolled over Ben Moore and Hayden Bailey, who finished eighth in the state last year, 6-1. Meanwhile, Cooper Harris and Michael Palmer continued to dominate, as they beat Seth Morgan and Parker McNeal 6-3 to earn the win.
The outcome against RiversideŚlast year's state runner-ups, was the same with Chadwell dropping his singles match to Braxton Barnes 0-6 for the lone loss of the set.
In doubles play, Lyman and McDaniel rolled over Chase Helms and Gage Crews 6-0 while Harris and Palmer beat Hayden Austin and Steve Stroud 6-1 to get the victory.
With the wins the boys tennis team pushes their season record to 8-0-1 overall.
Both teams were slated to be in action against Cedar Ridge and Earle on Monday, and both were scheduled to host Corning on Tuesday, Sept. 19. They'll be back on the road to Jonesboro on Monday, Sept. 25, for conference play with Harding Academy and Corning and are slated to visit Pocahontas on Tuesday, Sept. 26, for a tri-match with the Redskins and Highland Rebels.
They'll close out the regular season on Monday, Oct. 2, with a home match with Corning. The district tournament will be played Thursday, Oct. 5, at Jonesboro with the 3A state tourney set for Oct. 16 and 17, at Burns Park in North Little Rock.
