Records Fall to Mohawk Tennis Teams
The Piggott Mohawk tennis teams were in regular season action last week, taking on Cedar Ridge and Earle in a tri-match Monday in Jonesboro, then facing cross-county rival Corning at home on Tuesday. Along the way Emilee Seegraves set the new mark for school record for wins, while senior Carrington McDaniel also established a new Mohawk mark.
The Lady Mohawks took their match with the Lady Timberwolves 3-2 at Allen Park. Seegraves tok the only singles match, as she beat hailey Langston 6-0. In doubles action it was Brooke Roberts and Maggie Williams over Gracey Wood and Macie Carroll 7-5 while Seegraves and Destini Chase beat Morgan Galloway and Clancy Callahan 6-1. The other doubles sets went to Cedar Ridge, as Ashley Grissom and Shi Higdon fell to Kailee Gooch and Kinley Wood 5-7 and Grissom and Alexis Russell dropped their match with Langston and Lindsey Hackworth 3-6.
The boys only had one match scheduled against Cedar Ridge, as Cooper Harris and McDaniel combined to beat Wyatt Treadway and Johnny Henderson 6-3.
The Lady Mohawks also swept the Lady Bulldogs in a rain-shortened match. On the day they swept the pair of singles matches, with Seegraves beating 2016 state qualifier Tierra Curt 6-0 while Chase beat LaDonna Childs 6-0 to take the win.
In boys play the Mohawks took the match 2-1, with Cooper Harris and Michael Palmer beating Quavonn Williams and Alonzo Cummings 6-1 in doubles play while Palmer and Kaleb Chadwell combined to beat Tyler Clark and Josh McVey 6-0 in the other doubles match. In singles play, McDaniel fell to Matt Pigues 5-7.
Last Tuesday the 2016 state qualifiers from Corning visited Piggott and split with the Tribe.
The Lady Mohawks swept singles play, with Seegraves beating Kelsey Watson 6-0; Chase downing Mallory Landreth 6-1 and Grissom beating Annabelle Hawkins 6-0.
With the win, Seegraves sets the new school record for the most games won in a career with 665.
In doubles play Higdon and Alexis Russell beat Makayla Trace and Kellie Chandler 6-2, while the Lady Bobcats took the other two matches.
Last year's state qualifiers Cara Johnson and Maggie Couch beat Georgina Bautista and Madison Pool 0-6 while Brooke Roberts and Williams fell to Katie Clifton and Rachel Arnold 1-6.
As for the boys team, they split with the Bobcats but remained undefeated on the season.
In singles play Chadwell fell to last year's state tournament champion, Clint Hovis, 1-6, while Mazin Chase fell to Lucas Barajas 2-6.
In doubles play, the team of Josh Lyman and Carrington McDaniel beat Cole Woodard and Dylan Woodard 6-3 while Harris and Palmer beat Seth George and Bryden Hewell 6-4.
With the win over the Bobcats, McDaniel sets the new school record for the most matches won in doubles play in a career with 47.
The teams were slated to be in action Monday afternoon, although scores and stats were not available as of press time. They're were also scheduled to be in action on Tuesday, and will wrap up the regular season next Monday, Oct. 2 by hosting Corning.
