Lady Mohawk Basketball Teams in Action
The Piggott Lady Mohawks continue to battle through the early season, with all teams in action the past week. Last Tuesday the squads visited Cave City in conference play, and Monday night the Armorel Lady Tigers visited PHS in non-conference action.
Still shaking off the rust of taking a year off from competitive play, the senior squad struggled against the Lady Cavemen and dropped a 46-18 decision. Trailing 17-6 after one, their hosts extended the lead to 27-12 by the intermission and led 39-14 entering the fourth quarter.
Leading the Lady Mohawk offense on the night was Taylor Seal with 9 points, while Sierra Williams led all scorers for Cave City with 14.
In the junior high game the Lady Mohawks fell 27-11, paced by Claire Bellers with 9 points while Shae Hewitt and Haley Seal rounded out the offense.
The Lady Mohawks also dropped the seventh grade game at Cave City, falling 17-15 despite 12 points from Emma Langley.
Monday evening the Lady Tigers of Armorel visited PHS for the Tribe's home opener, and took two of three games on the night.
In the nightcap, the Piggott senior girls blew a late lead and dropped a one-point loss, 29-28.
Playing even in the early going, the two teams stood knotted at 4-4 after one. The Tribe then outscored their visitors 10-4 in the second, as they took a 14-8 advantage into the locker room at the half.
The Lady Mohawks also dominated much of the third, outscoring Armorel 10-7 in the frame to take a 24-15 lead into the fourth.
But, turnovers and trouble with the man-to-man defense plagued the Tribe in the fourth quarter, as they saw the lead evaporate. With 1:06 to play in the ballgame the Lady Tigers took the lead for the first time since early, as they outscored their hosts 14-4 in the fourth to take the win.
Seal led all scorers with 18 while Ayrielle Appleton had 16 for the Lady Tigers, and was also 7 of 10 from the free throw line. Rounding out the Piggott scoring were Madison Rahn and Brielle Burkman with 4 each while Riley Laden finished with two.
On the night, despite their physical play, the Lady Tigers did not send the Mohawks to the free throw line once--although they were whistled for six fouls on the game.
In the junior high game the Lady Mohawks also fell, this time by a score of 36-23. The Lady Tigers took a first quarter lead 10-8, then outscored the Mohawks 8-1 to take an 18-9 lead into the break. The Mohawks rebounded to take the third 11-6, pulling to within four at 24-20 at the end of three.
But, down the stretch the Lady Tigers outscored their hosts 12-3, to set the final score.
Bellers led the Tribe with 17, while Maddie Reeves, Seal, Langley and Hewitt also scored. Tya Sellers led all scorers with 23 for Armorel.
In the first game of the evening the Piggott seventh grade squad got the lone win of the night, beating the Lady Tigers 12-2. Emma Langley had 6, Tamia Davis finished with 3, Grace Hooten had 2 and Haley Seal had 1 in the win. Hailey Hopper had the lone field goal for Armorel, and the team was 0-6 at the free throw line.
All teams are slated to be back in action on Friday, Dec. 1, for the completion of the two game series with Cave City. On Monday, Dec. 4, they'll visit the Lady Tigers of Maynard with the junior high and senior high teams in action
