The Rector High School Sports Hall of Fame Lavaughn Robertson Memorial Basketball Classic got underway Monday at RHS, with the final set of games played on Tuesday. The fundraiser for the RHSSHOF was re-named this year in memory of Robertson, a former RHS standout athlete and founder of the hall of fame. It is sponsored by St. Bernard's Healthcare. The schedule included six games on Monday, and an additional four on Tuesday.

The first game of this year's classic saw the Piggott Lady Mohawks notch their first win of the season, as they pounded the Holcomb Lady Hornets 73-42. Taylor Seal paced the offense with 31 for the Tribe, while Madison Rahn finished with 16 in the blowout.

In the second game of the day, the Mohawk senior boys squad rolled over the Cooter (Mo.) Wildcats 68-46 paced by Trey Gossett with 20 and Cooper Harris with 11.

The Rector and Maynard junior girls met in the third game of the afternoon, with the Lady Tigers pulling out a 39-25 decision. Ellie Ford led the Cougars with 10. Afterward, the two junior high boys teams met with the Tigers holding-off a late Cougar run to win 35-32. Kameron Jones led the Cougars in the loss with 19 points.

The Rector and Maynard senior girls put on a good show in their contest, with the Lady Tigers hitting a basket with under three seconds to play to take a 44-42 decision. Gabby Clark had 15 and Kena Parrish had 12 for the Lady Cougars in the loss.

In the nightcap, the Rector Cougars had four players in double figures as they beat Maynard 70-60. Kirk Beshears finished with 18, Max Ford had 15 and Sam Simmons and Jordan Wilson had 10 each in the win.

Tuesday afternoon Rector's junior girls and boys prevailed in their contests with the junior Mohawks. Later, the Lady Cougars downed the short-handed Holcomb Lady Hornets 41-21 behind 15 from Clark.

In the nightcap, the Cougars notched their fifth win in a row with a 68-37 victory over the Cooter Wildcats. Kirk Beshears topped four RHS players in double figures with 15.

At halftime of the final game of the tournament the 2017 inductees were recognized. The class of 2017 included Charlie Bateman, a member of the Rector High School class of 1978, Scotty Johnson, a member of the Rector High School class of 1977 and the late David Shelton, of the Rector High School class of 1982. Also honored were the members of the 1964 Rector High School basketball team.

The tournament is one of the primary fundraisers for the organization, which funnels thousands of dollars each year back into the Rector School District in support of its students and programs.
