'Hounds Fall in Semi-Finals
The Marmaduke Greyhounds advanced over Cross County in the first round of the NEA Tournament, only to fall in the second round to CRA.
Down by nine early in the fourth quarter, Marmaduke refused to give up as they clawed their way back to take the lead with 24 seconds left before hanging on for a 61-59 win over Cross County this past Tuesday at First National Bank Arena in Jonesboro.
The Thunderbirds jumped out a 10-3 lead as Jonathan Webb hit a three-pointer for Marmaduke. Webb drilled another three-and Derek Agee added a three, as CC extended the lead to 17-8. Back to back three-pointers from Blake Boyd and Webb cut it to 17-14 Cross County at the end of one.
Marmaduke scored the first seven of the second as Webb drilled another three, Austin McCoy hit a jumper as Agee scored inside to make it 21-17 Marmaduke. The Hounds then went on a run to extend it to 30-25, but CC answered with five straight to tie the game at 30 at the half.
McCoy hit a jumper for Marmaduke early in the third and Cross County answered with a runner in the lane to make it 32-32 before Agee hit two free throws and a jumper to make it 36-32 Marmaduke. The two traded baskets, but Cross County added two scores in the last minute to take a 48-42 lead to the fourth.
Cross County stretched the lead to 51-42 with a three early in the quarter as Agee scored inside for Marmaduke to make it 51-44. Trailing 59-51 with 1:47 left. Agee scored in the paint for the Greyhounds before converting an old-school three-point play to cut the lead to 59-56. Webb hit two free throws before Agee's jumper in the lane game Marmaduke a 60-59 lead with 24 seconds left. Agee hit one of two with five seconds left to make the score 61-59 as Cross County's last second shot bounced off the rim giving the Greyhounds the win.
“An ugly win is better than a pretty loss,” Marmaduke head coach Justin Ward said after the game. “We didn't come ready to play or come ready to defend. When we got down the kids could have gave up but they kept fighting,” Ward added.
Agee scored 29 points to lead the Greyhounds as Webb added 20 points. McCoy tossed in four points, Bradshaw and Boyd each scored three points as McKinney chipped in two points.
Marmaduke let an eight point halftime lead slip away in the second half as Crowley's Ridge Academy (CRA) downed the Greyhounds 52-47 this past Saturday in Jonesboro.
CRA got on the board first with a three-pointer as Jonathan Webb canned back to back three-pointers for Marmaduke before Austin McCoy scored inside to make it 8-3 Greyhounds. The Falcons scored the next seven points to go up 10-8 only to see Webb drill another three-pointer and Derek Agee convert a conventional three-point play for Greyhounds to make the score 14-10 Marmaduke. CRA hit two free throws, McCoy netted a jumper for the Greyhounds before the Falcons hit a three-ball with 10 seconds left to make it 16-15 Marmaduke at the end of one.
McCoy hit a three and Agee netted a jumper to push Marmaduke's lead to 21-15 early in the second. CRA scored back to back baskets before Agee and Webb both hit one of two free throws to make it 23-19 with 4:02 left. Agee scored three straight baskets for Marmaduke making it 29-19 as the Falcons got a stick back baskets to make the score 29-21 Greyhounds at the half.
Webb hit a three-ball for the Greyhounds early in the third quarter to make it 32-21 before CRA scored back to back baskets to make it 32-25 Marmaduke. Agee scored inside for the Greyhounds, CRA hit two free throws and scored in the paint to make it 34-29 with 3:33 left. Webb scored inside and hit one of two free throws to make it 37-29 only to see CRA scored the last seven points of the quarter making it 37-36 Marmaduke at the end of three.
CRA hit two free throws and got a steal and layup to make it 40-37 Falcons early in the fourth before Agee scored inside for Marmaduke to make it 40-39 CRA. The Falcons hit a three-pointer and scored inside to make the score 45-39 as Agee hit two free throws making it 45-41 with 2:44 left. The Falcons hit one of two, Agee scored inside for the Greyhounds, CRA hit one of two free throws as Agee hit a jumper for Marmaduke to make it 48-45 Falcons. CRA hit four straight free throws as Marmaduke got a jumper from Agee with 13 seconds left setting the final score at 52-47 Falcons.
“We didn't play well in the second half. We didn't have anybody step up to lead the team or take care of the ball,” Marmaduke head coach Justin Ward said after the game. “It was just a lack of focus on our part tonight,” Ward added.
Agee scored 24 points to lead the Greyhounds as Webb tossed in 16 points. McCoy added seven points for Marmaduke.
