Cougars Drop Heartbreaker to Wildcats in Kell Classic

A foul with .02 seconds left on the clock allowed Trumann to hit one of two free throws sending Rector to a 57-56 loss in the quarter-finals of the Kell Classic this past Monday in Swifton.

The Wildcats jumped out to a 7-0 lead as Issac Haynie hit a jumper, Cody Roland canned a three-pointer and Alex Moses scored off the fast break before Rector got a fast break layup from Hunter Householder to make it 7-2 Trumann. Max Ford two free throws as Jordan Wilson hit one of two free throws on back to back trips to the line for the Cougars to make it 7-5 as the Wildcats got a stick back from Ben Turner and a basket inside from Zach Buchanan making it 11-5 Trumann with 3:09 left. Kale Hardin hit two free throws for Rector as Ford hit one of two free throws for the Cougars to cut the lead to 11-8 before Turner scored inside for Trumann to make it 13-8 Wildcats. Kirk Beshears went coast to coast for a Cougars' layup, Turner hit a jumper for the Wildcats as Hardin hit two free throws for Rector to make the score 15-12 Trumann at the end of one.

Buchanan converted an old-school three-point play for the Wildcats early in the second quarter before Rector got an inside basket from Hardin and a stick back from Beshears to make it 18-16 Trumann. Hardin converted an old-fashioned three-point play for the Cougars to give them their first lead at 19-18 only to see Turner hit two free throws for the Wildcats to make it 20-19 Trumann with 5:39 left. Beshears hit a jumper in the lane for Rector, MJ Barnes hit one of two free throws for the Wildcats, Hardin scored inside for the Cougars as Roland hit one of two free throws for Trumann making it 23-22 Rector. Beshears scored inside for Rector before Truamnn scored the next 13 points as Dedrick Coleman hit one of two free throws, Moses converted a conventional three-point play, Turner hit one of two free throws before scoring inside to make it 29-25 Wildcats. Turner canned back to back three-pointers to end the run putting Trumann up 10 points at 35-25. Beshears hit two free throws for Rector, Dakota Craig scored inside for the Wildcats as Ford scored inside for the Cougars to make the score 37-29 Trumann at the half.

Turner hit one of two free throws for Trumann with a minute and half gone in the third quarter as Rector got back to back baskets from Beshears and Householder to make it 39-33 Wildcats. Roland netted a jumper for Trumann, Ford went coast to coast for a Rector layup, Roland drilled a three-ball for the Wildcats before Hunter McNeely canned a three-pointer for the Cougars making it 43-38 Trumann with 2:33 left. Sam Simmons hit a jumper for Rector as Ford added two free throws with 11 seconds left to make the score 43-42 Trumann headed to the final quarter.

Hardin gave Rector a 44-43 lead with a stick back basket as Moses hit a jumper for the Trumann to put the Wildcats back out front 45-44. Roland hit two free throws for the Wildcats as did Barnes to push Trumann's lead to 49-44. Beshears converted a old-school three-point play for the Cougars, Turner was good on a three-pointer for Trumann as Craig scored inside for the Wildcats to make it 54-47 Trumann with 3:12 left. Roland hit two free throws for the Wildcats before Ford hit two free throws and followed with a three-ball to cut the lead to 56-52 with 59 seconds left. McNeely hit one of two free throws before canning a three-pointer with 33 seconds left to tie the game at 56. Roland was fouled with .02 seconds left and hit one of two free throws to give Trumann the 57-56 win.

Beshears scored 15 points to lead three players in double figures for Rector as Ford and Hardin had 14 and 13 points respectively. McNeely finished with seven points, #5 had four points, Simmons netted two points as Wilson had one point for the Cougars.

Turner led all scorers with 21 points for Trumann as Roland added 14 points. Moses finished with seven points, Buchanan had five points as Craig netted four points. Barnes scored three points, Haynie had two points as Coleman chipped in one point for the Wildcats.
