Mohawk Football Awards Banquet Saturday
Members of the Tribe are reminded the annual Piggott Mohawk football awards banquet will be held beginning at 6 p.m. this Saturday, Jan. 6, at Piggott High School. The speaker for the evening is former Piggott High School, and University of Arkansas, standout Tom Dixon. There is no charge to attend the awards assembly, while the cost of the dinner is $10 and tickets will be available at the door.
During the assembly the members of the 2017 Mohawk football team will be recognized, and post-season honors will be handed out.
Dixon was a 1964 graduate of PHS, where he excelled as a multi-sport athlete. In 1963 he served as captain for the undefeated District 3A championship team, and was named All-District in both 1962 and 1963. He was also named as an All-State selection in football for the 1963 season, and the Outstanding Back in Class A football in Arkansas.
In 1964 Dixon was selected as an Honorable Mention All-American in High School Football. That spring he was also selected to play in the Arkansas High School Football All-Star Game, where he was voted the most outstanding back.
Dixon was also awarded a full four-year scholarship to attend the University of Arkansas, and play football for the Razorbacks.
Redshirting as a freshman, he played all four years for the Hogs. He also had the chance to start in the defensive backfield with his former Mohawk teammate, Gary Adams. Along with Adams, his name remains on the Arkansas Razorback record books as he is one of only a handful of players with multiple interceptions in one ball game. A feat he accomplished in 1968, playing at Texas Tech.
In 1969 Dixon received the Chris Reed Award from the Ft. Smith Quarterback Club as the most improved senior Razorback. Later that year he was signed as a free agent by the Buffalo Bills, but waived the opportunity to go pro as he chose to serve his country instead.
