Ryan Rogers Chili Cook-Off Draws Near
The date is set, and teams are now being recruited, for the annual Ryan Rogers Memorial Chili, Jambalaya and Soup Cook-Off and Supper, set for Saturday, Feb. 24, at the Rector Community Center. The doors will open at 6 p.m. for hungry diners, as they're invited to sample the entries for a nominal cost of just $5 per person—or $20 for the immediate family. Along with plenty of chili, soup and jambalaya there'll be homemade desserts, drinks and all the trimmings.
The teams will be gathered earlier in the day, and judging is set to begin at 5 p.m. to allow the winners to be announced by the start of the dinner. Cooks, and teams of cooks, are invited to enter any or all of the categories for an entry fee of $25 for each. Organizers noted the entry fees fund the prize money, and added, “so the more entries, the merrier the prize money.”
Those wanting to enter may pay their fee to Community Center Director Linda Robinson at the Rector Water Department office.
In addition to cash awards for first, second and third place in each category, trophies will be presented for the winners to take home. First place in each category also earns the winner a place on the permanent Ryan Rogers Memorial plaque on display in the lobby of the Rector Community Center.
Organizers also indicated last year's winners Kristy Beasley, Abie Rogers, Jessie Petty and other regular competitors will be on hand to defend their titles, or take back forfeited reputations.
This year's cook-off will once again include presentation of the People's Choice Award, and a door prize will be handed out to one of those attending. Always the good sport, JoAnn Kirklin was presented with a package of Rolaids in 2017. Sources indicated this year's prize will be similar, although a bit more mysterious.
The Rector Community Center Committee will also be holding a drawing for a cash door prize at the conclusion of the event, with each diner entitled to one entry. Drawing winners must be present to collect their prizes.
