Entries Sought For Ryan Rogers Memorial Cook-Off
No one in Clay County should be confused about where the fun will be on the last Saturday of February. As in years past, folks will congregate at 6 p.m. on Feb. 24, at the Rector Community Center for the annual tribute to the late Ryan Rogers by enjoying a festive event named in his memory. Those attending the Ryan Rogers Memorial Chili, Jambalaya, and Soup Cook-Off and Supper will be treated to an evening of friendly competition, delicious food and door prizes—all for a good cause. Proceeds from the annual cook-off, as in years past, will benefit the continued maintenance and upkeep of the Rector Community Center.
Past winners of the event will be on hand to defend their titles and competition should be up to the usual delicious standards. On the line are reputations, trophies and prize money. Sponsored by the community center committee, organizers will gather donations to offset the expenses of the event. They will also charge a nominal $5 per person at the door for plenty of chili, jambalaya and soup. In addition, all condiments are furnished along with soft drinks, water, coffee and delicious home-made desserts. In an effort to make the event more affordable, a maximum cost of $20 feeds the immediate family.
Those interested in being contestants should contact Linda Robinson at the Rector Water Office at 870-595-3035 to reserve a spot in the competition. An entry fee of $25 per catagory funds the prize money for all winners, and competitors may enter as many categories as they wish for the additional $25 per entry. Each year a new set of judges evaluates each entry based on selected categories in a blind taste test. Points are then totaled and the winners declared. Judging is set to begin at 5 p.m. and is concluded not long after the doors open to the public at 6.
Continuing to bring excitement to the event, a People’s Choice trophy will again be presented that evening. In addition, the Community Center Committee will hold a drawing for a cash door prize, although the winner must be present to collect, and a mystery door prize.
