Cougars Advance to Regional Semi-Finals
The Rector Cougars erased a five point halftime deficit, and pulled away in the second half, as they advanced to the semi-finals of the 1A-East regional at Armorel Thursday night. The boys in blue outscored Calico Rock by 15 in the second half of play, easing to a 57-46 win.
Kirk Beshears led all scorers with 27 while Max Ford contributed another 17 for RHS.
The win earns the Cougars a spot in tonight's semi-final with the host Armorel Tigers in the late game, set to tip-off at 8:30.
In the other action Thursday night, Bay beat Mammoth Spring 59-48 to move into the other boys semi-final with ICC.
Today's games will begin at 4 p.m. with Norfork and Maynard in the first girl's semi, followed by ICC and Bay in the first for the boys. Bay's girls will take on Mammoth Spring in the 7 p.m. girls semi-final. And, the Cougars and Tigers will battle in the late game, and all indications from their earlier meeting are that it will be a good contest. In the district semi-finals last week, the Tigers came from behind to edge the Cougars 54-49.
The losers will meet in the third-fourth place seeding games at noon at 1:30 on Saturday with the winners meeting in the championship contests at 6 and 7:30 p.m. that evening at Armorel High School.
The Marmaduke Lady Greyhounds will play their semi-final contest against Earle as the Lady Bulldogs beat Salem 55-45 on Thursday. The other girls semi will be between Carlisle and Brinkley. In the boys bracket the semi-finalist are Earle-EPC and Marked Tree-Clarendon. Those finals and seeding games will also be played Saturday at Lepanto.
At Melbourne, the boy's 3A regional will see Manila and Rivercrest meeting in one semi-final while Osceola will take on Valley Springs in the other. In the girls' bracket it will be Riverside and host Melbourne in one of the semi's while Hoxie will take on Mountain View in the other. As it stands, both regional finals could be made up of all 3A-3 conference members.
Those finals and seeding games are also being played Saturday at Melbourne High School.
