Lady 'Hounds End Season at State

Marmaduke (32-8) was outscored 19-10 by Johnson County Westside (JCW) in the third quarter falling behind by 10 points and could never catch up as the Lady Greyhounds lost 58-46 in the opening round of the Class 2A state basketball playoffs played at White County Central high school in Judsonia this past Thursday.

The Lady Rebels got on the board first with a basket as Anna Meredith hit a three-pointer for Marmaduke to make it 3-2 Lady Greyhounds. JCW hit a jumper before Reesa Hampton hit one of three free throws for Marmaduke after being fouled shooting a three-pointer to make it 4-4. The Lady Rebels scored back to back baskets as the Lady 'Hounds got one of two free throws from Angel Johnson and a three-ball from Scout Weatherford making the score 8-8 with 4:04 left. Johnson White County went on a 9-0 run over the next four minutes to take a 17-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Emma Foster had a stick back basket to open the second quarter scoring for the Lady Greyhounds as the Lady Rebels scored inside to make it 19-10 JCW. Marmaduke reeled off the next eight points as Hampton and Meredith canned back to back treys and Foster got another stick back basket to make it 19-18 Lady Rebels with 4:05 left. Johnson County Westside hit a three-pointer, Hampton scored inside for Marmaduke, the Lady Rebels hit a jumper before Natalie Lentz got inside for a Lady Greyhounds' basket to make it 24-22 JCW. Hampton hit one of two free throws and a three-ball around a Lady Rebels' three-pointer to make it 27-26 Johnson County Westside at the half.

The Lady Rebels opened the third quarter with a 12-0 run before Foster scored inside for Marmaduke to make it 39-28 Johnson County Westside. JCW hit three free throws after being fouled on a three-point attempt as Lentz hit two free throws for the Lady Greyhounds making the score 42-30 JCW with 3:01 left. The Lady Rebels scored from the paint and hit two free throws as Marmaduke got back to back three-balls from Hampton and Meredith to make it 46-36 Lady Rebels at the end of three.

JCW pushed their lead to 53-36 as they scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter before the Lady Greyhounds got a stick back from Lentz and a three-pointer from Johnson to make it 53-41. The Lady Rebels scored inside, Meredith scored inside for Marmaduke, JCW hit two free throws as Hampton canned a three-ball for the Lady Greyhounds making it 57-46 Lady Rebels with 1:12 left. JCW added a free throw to set the final score at 58-46 Johnson County Westside.

“We didn't have a lot of energy to start the game but had some energy in the second quarter to get back in it,” Marmaduke head coach Rick Smith said after the game.

“I can't explain not being ready for a big game like this but we did not play good all four quarters,” Smith added. “Kind of disappointed in our level of play today,” Smith said.

Hampton led Marmaduke with 16 points as Meredith finished with 11 points. Lentz and Foster each had six points, Johnson tossed in four points as Weatherford added three points for the Lady Greyhounds.
