Mohawks Fall to WR, Rebound with Pair of Conference Wins
The Piggott Mohawks dropped a conference road game at Walnut Ridge Monday afternoon, falling to the Bobcats 5-4 despite jumping to the early lead. The Tribe turned around on Tuesday and hosted a pair of conference foes, beating both Osceola and Cave City in a mixed twin bill.
The Mohawks played a rare Wednesday contest on April 4, as they travelled to Rivercrest and handled the Colts by a final of 8-1. The following day they took on the Hoxie Mustangs and posted a 13-0 win.
Monday afternoon the Mohawks were in Lawrence County for a rematch with Walnut Ridge, a team they had beaten at home 6-2 on March 8.
Getting off to a hot start, the Tribe plated a run in the top of the first to take the early lead. Following a scoreless second, the Mohawks scored three more in the top of the third to take a 4-0 advantage behind a two RBI double by Trey Gossett. But, the Bobcats answered in the home half of the third with a run, as they cut the Piggott advantage to 4-1.
Neither team scored in the fourth, and the Walnut Ridge pitching led the Tribe at bey in the top of the fifth as well. In the home half of the inning the Bobcats scored three more runs to tie the game at 4-4, adding the game winning run in the home half of the sixth.
Josh Lyman pitched for the Mohawks, and took the loss, as he gave up five runs on six hits, while striking out five Bobcats and walking just three. Cole Manning got the win for Walnut Ridge, as he gave up the four runs on four hits, fanning six and walking five Mohawks.
The loss was only the third on the season for the Mohawks.
The following day the squad rebounded with a conference sweep at Independence Park. In the first game they shut out Osceola by way of the run rule 15-0, then dispatched Cave City by a final of 12-2 as they now stand at 13-3 and 10-2 in conference. The Mohawks will visit Corning Friday, April 13, in what is shaping up to be a key conference game. They're scheduled to make-up a game at Pocahontas on Monday.
