Mallard Sets New State Record at 3A Meet

Wednesday, May 2, 2018

Piggott High School multi-sport standout Nate Mallard made the most of his final appearance in the 3A state track meet Tuesday, winning the shot put for the second year in a row and setting a new state record in the process.

Mallard, who easily took the district title recently at Osceola, put the shot 50 feet, four and one-quarter inch to take the championship. He edged second place, Phillip Freppon of Bald Knob, by some five and a half feet as he recorded a distance of 44 feet 10 and three-quarters inches.

The Mohawk boys relay teams also made a good showing, while high jumper Quinton Reeves came up short in his event and distance specialist Brett Burns competed as well. The Lady Mohawks also had several strong performances, including efforts by Taylor Seal and distance runners Willow Lewis and Emma Shaw and the relay team.
