MHS Softball Falls in District, Ends Season in Regional
Marmaduke fell behind 10-0 after the first inning and could never get anything going at the plate as they fell to Salem 17-0 in one semi-final match-up at the 2A-2 district tournament this past Saturday in Salem. They went into the regional as the four seed, and fell to Pal-Wheatley Thursday afternoon at EPC.
Natalie Lentz and Rachel Martin led off with back to back singles for Marmaduke only to see Angel Johnson, Alyssa Henry and Emma Foster all strike out leaving the runners on base. Salem sent 15 batters to the plate in the bottom half of the inning and scored 10 runs to take a 10-0 lead after one inning. Reesa Hampton struck out leading off the top of the second inning for the Marmaduke as Karlie Gilliam singled. Maggie Mays grounded out before Morgan Joiner popped out for the third out. Salem sent 11 batters to the plate in the bottom of the second inning scoring eight runs to increase their lead to 18-0 after two innings of play.
Marmaduke went three up and three down in the top of the third inning as Lentz led off with a groundout, Martin flew out as Johnson looked at strike three as the game was called via the run rule with Salem winning 18-0.
Lentz, Martin and Gilliam each had a hit for the Marmaduke offense. Martin took the loss for Marmaduke as she pitched one and two-thirds innings giving up 17 runs on four hits with 13 walks and one hit batter. Mays pitched one-third of an inning allowing one run on no hits and two walks.
The Lady Greyhounds took on Marked Tree in the third place and lost 17-6 giving them fourth place of the district headed to regional tournament play next week in Lepanto. Lentz led Marmaduke with three hits, three runs scored, a RBI and three stolen bases as Foster had three hits, a run scored and a stole base. Gilliam had two hits and a run scored as Johnson had a hit, a run scored and a stolen base. Lentz took the loss as she pitched all seven innings, allowing 17 runs on 11 hits with 15 walks and one strikeout.
Marmaduke got to the semi-finals with a 16-15 walk off win over Flippin in the district opener this past Friday. Gilliam tagged and scored from third base on a pop up to the second baseman for the winning run. Henry led the Lady Greyhounds with five hits, three runs scored and three RBIs as Martin had three hits, one an inside the park homerun, three runs scored and two RBIs. Foster had three hits, three runs scored and two RBIs, Lentz had two hits, two runs scored and a RBI with Mays adding two hits, one run scored and two RBIs. Lentz got the complete game with as she allowed 15 runs on eight hits while walking 18 and striking out nine.
As the four seed the Lady 'Hounds drew the top-seeded Lady Patriots in the regional, and the Pal-Wheatley girls rolled to a 15-0 win to advance to the semi-finals, and next week's state tourney. Additional details may be found in the May 9, edition of the CCTD.
