Bidding farewell to his high school sports career, PHS standout Nate Mallard competed Saturday in the Arkansas State Meet of Champions at Lake Hamilton High School. Appearing in the prestigous meet for the second year in a row, Mallard turned in a less-than-sparkling put of 48 feet and 10 inches to take fifth place overall. Taking first place was William Burgess of the host team, as he put the shot 55 feet, seven and one-half inches.

Mallard had earned the spot in the Meet of Champions by defending the state shot put title he earned in the spring of 2017. Earlier this year he not only won the 3A state meet for the second year in a row, but set the new state record in the process at 50 feet four and one-quarter inches.

In fact, the Meet of Champions was the first outside meet the talented senior had competed in since last year's event in which he didn't win the shot put competition. At the UofA earlier this year he competed in an All-Star invitational indoor event and was third overall.
