McNeely Awarded Ryan Rogers Memorial Scholarship
In memory of the late CCTD sports editor, writer and photographer, the coaches of Rector High School have selected Hunter McNeely as the recipient of the 2018 Ryan Rogers Memorial Scholarship. The $500 scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior each spring at RHS in memory of Rogers, who passed away in early 2015.
Rogers was a proud graduate of the Rector school system, an ardent Cougar supporter and community activist. He spent over a decade covering the community as a print journalist and photographer, and had a special affection for the youth of the area—especially the young athletes. He also served multiple terms on the Clay County Quorum Court.
He died suddenly of natural causes in late January of 2015, preparing to attend and cover the RHS basketball homecoming. In memory of his devotion to the school district, and its athletes, the memorial scholarship was established that spring.
McNeely was outstanding as both an athlete and scholar, and was the salutatorian of this year's graduating class and chosen male athlete of the year. He was a three year starter at quarterback for the football Cougars, and saw a great deal of action for the basketball and baseball squads as well. This past season he pitched two no-hitters for the baseball boys in blue, helping to lead them to regional and state tournament play. The basketball squad also enjoyed postseason success.
In choosing McNeely, the coaches and administrators took into account the criteria of excellence in athletics, academics and school and community service. Previous winners include-Landen Crancer (2015), Victoria Hill (2016) and Sarah Beth Isom (2017).
Contributions may also be made to the scholarship fund in memory of Ryan Rogers to insure its continuation. Those wishing to make a contribution to the scholarship fund may do so at Centennial Bank or by contacting Ron Kemp at 870-239-1599 or by email at email@example.com
