Memorial Day Observances Set
Memorial Day will be marked this coming weekend with special observances and activities. Both Woodland Heights Cemetery at Rector, and the Piggott Cemetery, will be hosting their annual business meetings and special ceremonies.
The Piggott Cemetery will hold their observance at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 27, at the main entrance. Local attorney and historian Joe Cole will provide the opening and closing prayers, and will be the guest speaker for the occasion. The flag and wreath ceremony will be presented by the local VFW and Auxiliary, with “Taps” performed by a member of the PHS band. Fred Ort will provide the financial report, and the closing comments, and two members will be elected to the cemetery board.
Memorial Day will also be marked at Woodland Heights Cemetery in Rector, with their observance also set for 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 27. The ceremony will be held at the flagpole, and this year's special guest speaker is Dale Garrett, police chief and volunteer services officer for the John J. Pershing V.A. Medical Center in Poplar Bluff. The traditional annual Memorial Day sermon will be presented by Brother Boyce Cate, of Piggott, and Sherry Boyd will be giving the treasurer's report for the cemetery association. Organizers of the Rector observance are also planning for the traditional 21-gun salute to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
Preparations for the ceremonies are now underway, with volunteers placing flags on the graves of veterans today in both Rector and Piggott.
