Rector Team Wins District Title
Independence Park in Piggott was the site for this year's 12-and-under district tournament, with teams from across the region participating. Sunday afternoon the Rector Cougars beat the Tri-County Cougars to take the district title. In the 11-year-old championship it was the Blytheville Bombers over the Paragould Pirates.
The bracket for this year's district began Thursday evening with four games, as players and fans braved sweltering conditions. Playing a double-header, the Rector squad beat Pocahontas in the first game 12 to 1. They followed that up in the late game with a 14-3 win over cross-county rival Corning.
Meanwhile, the Piggott team took on the Blytheville 11's in their first round game, and fell by a final of 15 to 2. In the other first round game Thursday evening it was the Paragould 11's over Corning 11 to 2.
The Piggott squad was back in action Friday evening, as pool play continued for seeding purposes. They took on the Tri-County Cougars, who are based in Melbourne, and fell by a final of 12-2. As in the earlier games, the squad ran short of pitching as they took the loss. The one bright spot on the game was a solo home run by Lawson Tompkins, who also came on to pitch in relief.
The Rector squad advanced into bracket play on Saturday, and battled to a 5-1 win over the Delta squad to advance to Sunday's championship. Making the short trip back to Piggott Sunday afternoon, the two Cougar teams battled with Rector beating Tri-County 15 to 3 to claim the district title, and advance in postseason play.
The squad is coached by Nate Henderson, Matt Rabjohn and Mark Vavak. The roster includes Triston Brown, Carter Hill, Ashton Scott, Hayden Vavak, Brayden Thompson, Cash Lindsey, Samual Shipley, Cooper Rabjohn, Kolton Watson and Drew Henderson.
