Piggott Summer Tennis League Wraps-Up
The Piggott Municipal Tennis courts once again hosted summer league play for local players in July, with both the boys and girls competing. The leagues are hosted each summer by long-time PHS tennis coach Paul Seegraves, in preparation for the high school season to come.
A total of 11 girls were divided into three divisions for pool play, with the division winners and runner-ups awarded medals.
The Red Division winner was Maggie Williams, with Destini Chase as the runner-up. The Black Division winner was Hayley Springsteen, with Callie Henson as the runner-up. Meanwhile, the White Division winner was Autumn Covert, with Ava Baggett as the runner-up.
In tournament play, in the first round Baggett defeated Shalyn Lewis 6-0 by default. In the quarterfinals, Maggie Williams downed Baggett 6-1; Macey Williams defeated Springsteen 7-6 (7-2); Chase beat Covert 6-1 and Brooke Roberts defeated Henson 6-2.
In the semifinals, Maggie Williams downed Macey Williams 7-6 (9-7) while Roberts defeated Chase 6-3. This set up the third place game, with Macey Williams beating Chase 6-3.
In the championship, Roberts beat Maggie Williams 6-2 to take the title.
In the consolation tourney, Covert beat Lewis by default to move into the semifinals. In semifinal play, Springsteen got by Covert 6-2 and Henson downed Baggett 6-1. In the consolation championship game it was Springsteen over Henson 6-3.
Covert also earned the Junior Division Championship, for those in eighth grade and under.
There were eight boys placed in two divisions for pool play. Winner of the Red Division was Shawn-Hudson Seegraves while Cooper Harris was runner-up. Aden Baggett won the Black Division, with Kade Johnson as the runner-up. All four of the first and second place winners received medals.
In tournament play, Seegraves defeated Hayden Blue 6-0 in the first round, while Brandon Palmer downed Tyson Peters 6-0, Cooper Harris beat Johnson 6-0 and Michael Palmer defeated Baggett 6-0.
In semifinal play, Seegraves beat Brandon Palmer 6-0 and Michael Palmer downed Harris 7-5. This set up the third place, and championship sets, with Harris beating Brandon Palmer 6-3 for third place while Seegraves downed Michael Palmer 6-3 for his third straight senior division title.
In the consolation tournament, Blue defeated Peters 6-1 and Johnson downed Baggett 6-3 in the semifinals. The consolation championship then went to Blue, as he defeated Johnson by a tally of 6-2.
Coach Seegraves reports the first official high school practice for the upcoming tennis season is set for Monday, Aug. 6. The season will get underway on Monday, Aug. 20, as the Mohawks travel to Allen Park, in Jonesboro, for a set with the Riverside Rebels.
