Local students will return to the classroom on Monday, Aug. 13, as the 2018-2019 school year is set to begin.

Rector Schools

Both students and teachers have been preparing for the first day back to school, set for Monday, Aug. 13, in the Rector School District. Both high school and elementary classes will begin at 8 am., with dismissal time at 3 pm. Elementary students who walk or are picked up will be dismissed at 2:55 pm.

Breakfast will be served Monday morning at the cost of $1 for students and $2.30 for adults, with the reduced meal price set at 30 cents. Lunches will cost $2.30 for students, $3.65 for adults, and the reduced meal price is 40 cents. The lunch schedule remains the same beginning with the kindergarten lunch at 10:30 am, first grade at 10:50 am, second grade at 11 am, third grade at 11:10 am, fourth grade at 11:15 am, fifth grade at 12:25 am, sixth grade at 12:30 pm, and high school lunch beginning at 12 pm. Parents are encouraged to make use of EZPay which is available on the school’s website, rector.k12.ar.us. Money can be placed on the student’s account at any time during the school year.

Each year, as required, students must complete the Free and Reduced-Price Lunch Application. This application can be updated at any time should household income change. Any questions should be addressed with Mary Sanders, school nutrition director.

Parents are encouraged to look over the student handbook as changes have been made.

Buses will depart around 3 pm.

Each bus displays a cartoon character and number, allowing students to easily find their bus. Some drivers have changed. The bus schedule is as follows:

Bus 1 -- Cougar -- Bill Rabjohn (morning) and Carol Hamm (evening); CR 483 (6:35 a.m. and 3:15 p.m.), CR 480, CR 484, CR 481, CR 490, Greenway Hwy 49, Hargrave Corner, Indian Hills Apts, Cheyenne Drive, Fourth and Inscore, Fourth and Ballard (7:25 a.m. and 3:10 p.m.)

Rector Elementary School welcomes six new members of their faculty: Mackenzie Woolverton as sixth grade literacy teacher, Bridgette Sain as a kindergarten teacher, Brooke Clayton as a kindergarten teacher, Jennifer Collier as kindergarten through fifth grade special education teacher, Pam Mills as counselor, and Mandy Isom as literary coach.

Additionally, six new members of the Rector High School staff are welcomed. Kelsey Bishop as junior high special education teacher, Misty Stirnaman as special education aide, Amber Bucy as music teacher, Payton Holcomb as math teacher, Christin Holmes as counselor, and Kyle Kempf as band teacher.

Both Rector Elementary and High School will host their open house from 6 to 8 p.m. this Thursday, Aug. 10.

Piggott Schools

Students in the Piggott School District return to classes on Monday, Aug. 13. Teachers, parents and students alike have been prepping for the first day of school over the past few weeks, obtaining school supplies and decorations for classrooms, among other things they need to achieve greatness this school year. The building will open at 7:30 a.m. and classes will begin at 8 am and end at 3 pm. Elementary students who are picked up are dismissed at 2:55 pm, students who ride the bus are dismissed at 3:05 pm, and those who walk are dismissed at 3:15 pm. Buses will depart around 3:10 pm. Piggott elementary also welcomed three new teachers in the 2018-2019 school year; Mistie Gossett, Laura Murray and Haley Baker.

Piggott Elementary School entertained both parents and students, along with faculty, at their open house on Monday while Piggott High School entertained new and returning students, parents, and faculty on Tuesday and hosted seventh grade orientation at 5:30.

Piggott High School classes run from 7:50 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. There will be eight classes in a school day. As in the previous years, the class schedules will be as follows. First period will be from 7:50 to 8:35 a.m., with second period is 8:39 to 9:54 a.m. An activity period will follow, at 9:24 to 9:47 a.m. Third period will be from 9:51 to 10:36 a.m. and fourth period is from 10:40 to 11:25 a.m. First lunch is 11:29 to 11:59 while other students are completing their fifth period at 11:29 a.m. to 12:14 p.m. and second lunch will be 12:18 to 12:48 p.m. Students who attend first lunch will be in fifth period from 12:03 to 12:48 p.m. Sixth period is scheduled for 12:52 to 1:37 p.m., seventh period will be 1:41 to 2:26 p.m., and eighth period will be 2:30 to 3:15 p.m.

Piggott High School acquired new members to their staff, including Chris Brantley as head boy’s basketball coach and biology teacher; Shelby Slaven as seventh grade life science teacher, distance learning teacher, head girl’s volleyball coach and head girls’ track and field coach; Don Simmons as senior high health teacher, fitness teacher, driver’s education, assistant football coach and assistant track and field coach; Will Daffron as teacher’s aide and assistant football coach; John Gardner as resource officer; and Laura Brantley as head girl’s basketball coach.
