Mohawk Tennis Teams Set for Season
The Piggott Mohawk tennis teams were slated to begin their regular season Monday afternoon, taking on the Riverside Rebels at Jonesboro. Tuesday, they were scheduled to take part in a match with Highland, Nettleton and Brookland, also at Allen Park in Jonesboro.
This Thursday they're scheduled to take part in a conference tri-match with CRA and Harrisburg, also at Allen Park in Jonesboro.
For the 2018 campaign, long time Mohawk tennis Coach Paul Seegraves has a good mix of young talent—but only limited experience.
The boys squad boasts the most returning talent, as Cooper Harris and Michael Palmer are both in their third year and both were named All-District last season. In doubles play they were fifth in the state, otherwise there is a wealth of first-year players on the boys squad.
Included on the roster are sophomores Hayden Blue, Clayton Kemp and Chandler Smart and freshmen Brandon Palmer and Tyson Peters. Serving as managers are eighth graders Shawn-Hudson Seegraves and Aden Baggett and seventh grader Kade Johnson.
“Team wise, the district looks wide open without any team looking as the clear cut team to beat,” Coach Seegraves said of the boy's season. “Newport and us are the only teams that have any state tournament experience.”
For the girls team, Shi Higdon, Maggie Williams, Destini Chase, Brooke Roberts and Macey Williams are all second year players, the remaining are all first-year players—including the lone senior, Hayley Springsteen.
Rounding out the girl's roster are junior Ryleigh Laden; sophomores Allison Parker-Lewis and Emma Shaw and freshman Callie Henson. Manager is seventh grader Ava Baggett.
“As far as the girls go, team wise Cave City looks to a have a strong team back,” Seegraves offered. “They finished in the top five in class 4A last year and have those players returning this year. Corning also returns some key players.”
Conference play continues on Aug. 27, with a tri-match with Harrisburg and Newport at Jonesboro. The Tribe will visit Paragould on Aug. 30; and the girls will visit Caruthersville on Thursday, Sept. 6. Both teams will be in action on Sept. 10, at Jonesboro in a match with Harding Academy and Corning; The Mohawks will also visit the Bobcats, at Corning, on Tuesday, Sept. 11.
One of two rare home matches will be played on Thursday, Sept. 13, as the Mohawks host Paragould and the municipal courts. They'll be back in Jonesboro on Sept. 17, to take on Riverview, Cave City and Cedar Ridge and will host Corning in the home-and-away set at Piggott on Tuesday, Sept. 18.
The Mohawks will visit Pocahontas on Sept. 20, and will play at Corning on Sept. 24, to close out the regular season.
The district tournament will be played at Allen Park, in Jonesboro, on Thursday, Sept. 27. The 3A state tourney will be played Oct. 8 and 9, in Conway and the overall state finals are scheduled for Oct. 15 and 16, at Burns Park in North Little Rock.
The majority of regular season matches begin at 4 p.m. with the district and state tournaments getting underway at 9 a.m. each day.
