Lady Mohawk Volleyball Team in Action
The Piggott Lady Mohawk volleyball squad began conference play last week, sweeping Cedar Ridge on the road then falling at Hoxie. All teams were scheduled to visit Ridgefield Christian Tuesday evening, although scores and stats were not available as of press time.
The Tribe travelled to Newark on Tuesday, Aug. 28, to take on Cedar Ridge and swept the night. The Junior girls took their match in two straight sets, as they began the conference schedule at 1-0.
As for the senior girls, they swept their hosts 25-15, 25-22 and 25-13. Leading the way was Madison Rahn with 17 assits and eight kills while Carlie Vancil had an ace; Macey Williams was 89 percent serve receive; Maddie Reeves had one ace, five digs and 94 percent serve receive; Bailey Davis had six kills; Claire Bellers had five aces and five kills; Annalee Massey had four kills and Jordan Tate finished with two kills and three blocks.
On Thursday, Aug. 30, the squads made the trip to Hoxie to take on the conference leading Lady Mustangs. The junior “B” and junior squads both dropped their matches in straight sets, while the senior squad handed their hosts their first set loss of the season, although they eventualy fell in the conference match.
In the junior high match, the young Lady Mohawk squad came out hot and looked to take the first set. But, the Lady Mustangs battled back and pulled even in the set at 23-23, and went on to win 26-24.
In the senior match the Lady Mustangs rolled 25-13 and 25-15 in the first two sets, with the Tribe responding with a 25-23 victory in the third. Hoxie rebounded in the fourth set, taking the match with a final of 25-11 as they moved to 7-0 and 3-0 in conference play.
Following Tuesday's road match at Jonesboro, the Tribe will return to PHS Thursday night to take on Cave City. On Saturday, Sept. 8, the senior squad will travel to Harrison to compete in this year's SlamFest. Their first round game is set for 10 a.m. as they take on Valley Springs. A win will earn them a 1 p.m. contest with the winner of the Hackett/Alpena contest, and a loss will see them take on the loser of that match at noon. The other teams in the bracket include Yellville, Elkins, Highland and Mansfield. On Monday, Sept. 10, all teams will visit Harrisburg in conference play and the following night, Tuesday, Sept. 11, the junior and senior teams will host Palestine-Wheatley. On Thursday, Sept. 13, they'll visit Newport.
