Tribe Tennis Teams Compete
The Piggott Mohawk tennis teams were in action last week as they split with Newport, beat Harrisburg and dropped matches to 5A Paragould.
The Lady Mohawks prevailed in their match with Newport, taking the Lady Greyhounds 4-1. Posting singles wins for the Tribe were Maggie Williams over Katie Lucas, while Destini Chase and Shianne Higdon both edged Olivia Hatfield, the latter in a tie-breaker.
In doubles play, Brooke Roberts and Callie Henson beat Lucas and Hatfield 4-1 while Emma Shaw and Ryleigh Laden fell to the same duo 2-4.
The Mohawk boys didn't fare as well, as they could only muster one win in five chances against the Newport squad. Cooper Harris and Michael Palmer earned that win in doubles play, as they edged Dawson Vanwinkle and Daryn Mann 6-2. The same Newport duo then beat Brandon Palmer and Clayton Kemp 1-6. In singles play, Hayden Blue fell to Lucky Loftin, a state qualifier last year, Tyson Peters was edged by Malachi Cates and Chandler Smart also fell to Cates.
The Tribe also took on Harrisburg, who forfeited their girls match due to lack of players. Their only boy's player to take to the court was Caleb Neal, and he was beaten by Cooper Harris 6-0 to take the match.
On Thursday the Mohawks visited Paragould, and took on the 5A state qualifiers from last year. The boy's set went to the Rams 1-5, while the girls match was stopped due to lightning with Paragould ahead 2-5.
In girl's play, Henson posted the only win for the Tribe as she beat Berry Dickey 6-5. Meanwhile, Higdon, Shaw and Laden all dropped their matches as they took on Claire Phillips, Anna Gazaway and Sadie Wagster. Higdon and Henson also fell to Phillips and Dickey in doubles play while Shaw and Hannah Speer dropped theirs to Gazaway and Wagster.
The boy's fell in the lone singles match, as Blue was beaten by Sam McBride. In doubles play, Cooper Harris and Michael Palmer beat last year's 5A state qualifiers Jonah Treece and Cole Edwards 6-1 while Michael and Brandon Palmer posted a doubles win as well. Collared with losses were Blue and Smart, Blue and Peters and Smart and Peters.
The girls' team wrapped-up August with a record of 4-4 overall, while the boys also move to 4-4 with the splits.
On Thursday, Sept. 6, the girls visited Caruthersville and split 2-2. Callie Henson got a singles win over Anya Mile, although rain called a halt to the remaining matches. In doubles action, Henson and Emma Shaw beat Mize and Lexi Stewart while Ryleigh Laden and Hannah Speer fell to Tyler Poter and Jeneisha Foreman while Maggie Williams and Shianne Higdon lost to Lexy Walker and Rachel Rickman.
Ava Baggett also posted a win over Abigail Mason in the lone JV match.
The split with the Lady Tigers moved the girls record to 4-4-1. They were slated to be in action Monday at Jonesboro, and visit Corning on Tuesday. The squads are also slated to host Paragould Thursday.
