Mohawk Tennis Competes at State
Five members of the Piggott Mohawk tennis teams took part in the 3A state tournament at Conway last week, with the boy's doubles team of Cooper Harris and Michael Palmer advancing to the semifinals.
In the girls bracket, sophomore Destini Chase faced third seeded Summer Davidson in the first round and fell 3-6 and 1-6. In doubles play, sophomores Brooke Roberts and Macey Williams took on fourth seeded Marie Claire Wilcox and Jordan Price of Smackover in the first round, and fell to the pair of talented seniors 2-6 and 4-6.
The following day Episcopal Collegiate won their 11th straight team championship, with Atkins as runner-ups and conference rivals Cave City third. Meanwhile, the Lady Mohawks finished as the 11th ranked girls' team in the state.
In the boy's bracket Harris and Palmer, both juniors, faced Reid Hensley and Aaron Hogue of Clinton in the first round, winning 6-2 and 6-1. In the second round they took on Kennen Martin and Logan Kersten, of Atkins, and despite losing the first set 6-7 (5-7), they re-grouped and took the second and third 6-3 and 6-0 to advance to play on Tuesday.
In the semifinals they were paired with the 3A-4 district champs, and second seeded, Chris Carico and A.J. VanLear of Bergman, and fell 2-6 and 2-6. In the third place match they took on Trenton Brasel and Marcus Needles of Fountain Lake, and lost 6-8.
Episcopal Collegiate also won the boy's title, their 14th in the last 16 years. Baptist Prep was runner-ups and the Mohawks boy's team finished as the sixth ranked team in the state. For their efforts Harris and Palmer were also named as All-State performers.
