Lady Mohawk Volleyball Squad Qualifies for State
The Piggott Lady Mohawk volleyball team wrapped up their regular season last Tuesday, Oct. 9, and marked senior night for the four members of the class of 2019—Hayley Springsteen, Harley Earnheart, Bailey Davis and Alexis Russell. On Saturday they beat Palestine-Wheatley in straight sets to advance in their conference tournament, being held at PHS, and Monday night they punched their ticket to the 3A state tournament with a four set win over Newport. On Tuesday they took second seeded Walnut Ridge to five sets, but fell to the Lady Bobcats.
Dropping the set to the Lady Bobcats on senior night, the Tribe entered the bracket as the fourth-seeded team as they faced the Lady Patriots in the first round. Getting off to a slow start in the first set, they eased past Palestine-Wheatley 27-25, then notched wins of 25-23 and 25-16 to advance.
Monday night they took on the third seeded Lady Greyhounds, who had advanced on Saturday with a straight set win over Harrisburg. And, with a big crowd of Mohawk supporters on hand, including many of the football players, the Mohawks upset Newport in four sets to advance. Getting the hot hand early, they won the first set 25-18 and took the second 25-21 before the Lady Greyhounds responded and took the third 22-25. The fourth set proved to be a battle, as neither team could pull away from the other. But, the Mohawks would not be denied, as they edged Newport 25-22.
Sassy Rahn, who twisted her ankle in the first set, gutted-out an outstanding performance to lead the team with 44 assists, 10 digs and two kills. Meanwhile, Macey Williams had 28 digs; Claire Bellers had 17 digs, 16 kills and two aces; Bailey Davis and 12 kills and one block; Jordan Tate had six kills and two blocks; Annalee Massey had four kills and two blocks; Carlie Vancil had 11 digs and Maddie Reeves finished with seven kills in the win.
Tuesday evening they took on Walnut Ridge, and despite winning the first two sets, fell in five. As a result, the Lady Bobcats will take on Hoxie in the championship match at 5:30 Thursday afternoon. As the three seed from 3A-East the Mohawks are slated to play Tuesday evening in the first round of the 3A state tournament at Paris.
