Junior High Football Teams in Action
With the season winding down, local junior high football teams have been busy. This week, they'll conclude the 2018 campaign.
Rector Beats Midland
The Rector Junior Cougars made it a clean sweep of conference mate Midland last Thursday, going on the road and bringing home a 32-6 win over the Junior Mustangs.
Leading the way for the Cougars was John Ford Hendrix with 176 yards on 14 carries, and three of the Rector touchdowns. Quarterback Jerron Bucy was one-for-one passing, as he completed a two point conversion to Sam Shipley. Jacob Cox also had a 36 yard touchdown run for the Cougars, on his only carry of the game. Notching two point conversions were Logan Emerline, Connor McCluskey and Carter Hill. Jackson Hill also had an interception in the win.
It was a good win, Coach David Hendrix said afterward. A good win that these kids deserved and needed.
The seventh grade team also contributed to the sweep, beating the young Mustangs 30-0 in a two quarter contest prior to the junior high game.
The junior squad is scheduled to close out their season this Thursday, Oct. 25, as they host Marked Tree at Paul Temerian Field in Rector. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Jr. Mohawks Fall to Osceola
The Piggott Junior Mohawks dropped a 32-0 conference game to Osceola on Thursday, Oct. 18. The young Seminoles featured a balanced attack, as they took the early lead and held the Tribe in check late.
The visitors scored touchdowns of 50, 85, 80, 72 and 17 in posting the win although they were only one-for-five in conversion attempts. The scores came on three runs and two pass completions. For the Mohawks, Joe Carpenter led the rushing effort with 97 yards on 16 totes; Nicky Risner had 79 yards on 16 carries; Jason Jefferies had 30 yards on five carries; and Kyler Smith had 16 yards on six carries.
The junior Mohawks are scheduled to close out their season on the road Thursday night, as they'll travel to Newport and take on the Greyhounds. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
