Hoops Season Underway
High school basketball season is underway for the local girl's teams, while the boys await the end of the football playoffs.
The Lady Cougars kicked-off the basketball season on the road Monday night, as they visited Gosnell and beat the Lady Pirates by a final of 44-38.
In the win over Gosnell, the Lady Cougars jumped to an early lead and enjoyed a 14-5 advantage by the end of the first quarter. The Lady Pirates battled back in the second, with Rector leading 25-18 at the break. The Rector girls edged their hosts in the third, taking a 35-26 lead into the fourth quarter, and held on down the stretch for the non-conference win.
Kena Parrish led the team with 13, while Gabby Clark and Ellie Ford were close behind with 11 and 10 points respectively. Clark also handed-out four assists, while Ford had four assists and six boards in the win.
The squad came back Tuesday night and beat Corning 52-44 behind a career-high 22 from Ford while Parrish and Clark were also in double figures with 11 and 10 points. Meanwhile, the junior high squad split the two games, beating the Lady Pirates and falling to the Lady Bobcats.
The Rector girls are slated to visit Marked Tree on Thursday and will travel to Armorel on Monday.
Meanwhile, the Piggott Lady Mohawk basketball team is scheduled to begin this year's campaign Thursday night with a home non-conference set with the Maynard Lady Tigers. The first game is scheduled to tip-off at 5:30 at PHS.
This year the squad is under the direction of Laura Brantley, as she takes over from Melissa Hopkins. Brantley's husband, Chris, was also named head coach of the boy's program in the off-season.
After Thursday night's home set with Maynard, the Lady Mohawks will remain idle until next Thursday, Nov. 15, as they're scheduled to host Hoxie in conference play. On Monday, Nov. 19, they'll complete the home-and-away set with the Lady Tigers, as they travel to Maynard. They'll resume play the Monday after Thanksgiving with a conference set of games against Manila.
