Mohawk Hoops Teams in Action
The Piggott Mohawk basketball team dropped a pair of games in the past week, both by narrow margins. Last Friday night they hosted Hoxie and fell 66-65 to the Mustangs. Monday evening they made the trip to Maynard, along with the girl's teams, and came up on the short end of a 55-50 decision.
In the contest with Hoxie, the Mohawks jumped to an early lead on the visiting Mustangs as they were up 20-16 by the end of the first quarter. Hoxie took the second frame 19-9, as they led 35-29 at the break. The Tribe edged the visitors 20-18 in the third, and 16-13 in the fourth, to set the final.
At Maynard Monday night, the Mohawks battled throughout, but couldn't endure an 18-7 fourth quarter in taking the five point loss. Leading the way for the Tribe was Trey Gossett with 20 while Holden Tarno finished with 15. The PHS junior team did bring home a win in their contest, as they beat the young Tigers 49-34 to complete the season sweep.
The junior and senior boys were scheduled to be in action Tuesday evening at Marmaduke, as they take on the non-conference Greyhounds. They will then remain idle until after Thanksgiving, and will swing into conference play at Manila on Tuesday, Nov. 27, as they visit the Lions.
The Piggott Lady Mohawks dropped their third straight Monday night, as they made the trip to Maynard to complete the home-and-away set with the Lady Tigers. Late last week they fell in conference to Hoxie.
The Tribe continued to have trouble scoring in last Friday night's home contest with the Lady Mustangs, which was delayed a day due to the bad weather on Thursday. Finding it difficult at both ends of the floor, the PHS girls trailed 15-2 after one, and 49-4 at the half. The Lady Mustangs extended their lead in both the third and fourth quarters, en route to the 74-10 win.
Monday evening the girls made the trip to Maynard for a re-match with the Lady Tigers and came up on the short end of a 60-28 decision. Pacing the Tribe was sophomore guard Claire Bellers with 10 points on the night. Meanwhile, the host team also took the junior high contest 50-25.
With the losses the Piggott senior girls fall to 0-3 overall, and 0-1 in conference play. They'll remain idle through the Thanksgiving holiday, and will return to play on Monday, Nov. 26, with a conference home game against the Manila Lions.
