Mohawk Hoops Teams See Action
Both Piggott Mohawk basketball teams were in action in the past week, with the girls picking up their first win under new coach Laura Brantley. Meanwhile, the boys are still looking for their first win of the year.
The Piggott Lady Mohawks notched their first win for new coach Laura Brantley Thursday night, as they travelled to Gosnell and beat the Lady Pirates 46-33. Monday evening they visited Trumann in conference play and came up on the short end of a 62-34 decision. As for the junior girls, they fell in both games.
The Tribe visited Gosnell Thursday evening, and jumped to an 11-4 lead by the end of the first. They extended the lead with a 17-4 second quarter, but were outscored 12-6 in the third. Getting a strong fourth quarter performance, they outscored their hosts 18-13 down the stretch to set the final score.
Leading the way was Sassy Rahn with 22 while Claire Bellers was also in double figures with 10, Brielle Burkman had nine, Abby Dutka finished with three and Emma Shaw added a deuce. As a team the Tribe was 21 of 29 from the free throw line.
In the early contest the junior girls had no answer for the Lady Pirates, falling 44-7 with Grace Hooten leading the squad with five points.
Monday night the Tribe visited Trumann for conference play and fell 62-34. Getting off to a slow start, the Lady Mohawks trailed 11-4 after one, and were outscored 17-4 in the second. On the night the team was led by senior Burkman with 10 while Rahn finished with nine, Ryleigh Laden had five, Bellers had four and Dutka and Makayla Allman had two each.
The junior girls also came up short at Trumann, as they fell 44-20. Hooten led the way with nine points, Emma Langley had six and Alyssa Manor had four points in the loss.
The senior girls now stand at 1-5 overall and 1-3 in conference play. They'll be back in action Monday, Dec. 10, as they host Walnut Ridge at PHS. This year the Lady Bobcats are coached by former Lady Mohawk head coach Chase Halbrook.
The Piggott Mohawks hosted the Gosnell Pirates in 3A-3 conference play Friday night at PHS, and were swept by their visitors.
In the varsity contest, the athletic Pirates sprinted to an early lead and enjoyed a 20-10 advantage by the end of the first quarter. They extended the lead with a 26-9 second quarter, and outscored their hosts 15-4 in the third to put the game out of reach.
Leading the way for the Tribe in scoring was Braden Ralph with 13 while Trey Gossett finished with seven and Cooper Harris had five points in the loss. Leading the Pirates in the win was Brayden Burcham with 13 points. With the loss the senior squad now stands at 0-6 and 0-3 in conference play.
The junior Pirates also took the early contest, as they edged the junior Mohawks.
All the Mohawk teams were in action Tuesday evening against Trumann, with the visitors sweeping the day. They'll be on the road Friday at Hoxie, and will return to Lawrence County on Tuesday, Dec. 11, to visit the Walnut Ridge Bobcats.
