Mohawk Tennis Teams Celebrate Past Season
Members of the Piggott Mohawk boys and girls tennis teams gathered Thursday, Dec. 6, at Los Compadres, in Piggott, to hand out awards and recognition from this fall's season.
In welcoming those in attendance, long-time coach Paul Seegraves offered thanks to God, his family, and Piggott High School. He also offered thanks to Lady Mohawk volleyball Coach Shelby Slaven, and cheer sponsor Jenna Mobley, for allowing some of their athletes to also play tennis. He next offered his gratitude to the players, parents, community and to the Clay County Times-Democrat for coverage. Seegraves also offered thanks to this year's managers, Ava Baggett, Aden Baggett, Kade Johnson and Shawn-Hudson Seegraves.
The girls team ended the season at 10-9-3, third in district and 11th in state. Seegraves then presented a commemorative can of pink tennis balls to each player and manager Baggett. Included were freshman Callie Henson; sophomores Destini Chase, Brooke Roberts, Emma Shaw, Hannah Speer and Macey Williams; juniors Shianne Higdon, Ryleigh Laden and Maggie Williams and senior Hayley Springsteen.
The individual awards included most improved, which went to Henson as she won 15 matches as a freshman. Maggie Williams was recognized for fourth place in district; Henson and Higdon were recognized for fourth in doubles;
Individual Awards: chase was recognized for placing third in district in singles play, and for qualifying for state; and Roberts and Macey Williams were recognized for third place in district in doubles, and as state qualifiers.
Named to the 3A-2 All-District team were six players, the most of any of the schools, as Henson, Chase, Roberts, Macey Williams, Higdon and Maggie Williams were all recognized. Maggie Williams was also recognized as the Maxpreps Player of the Year, and ended the regular season as the second-ranked singles player in the district.
The Mohawk boys team ended the season at 10-11, were district runner-ups and finished sixth in the state in 3A. During the awards dinner, each player was presented with district runner-up patches and a can of balls. Recognized were managers Kade Johnson, Aden Baggett and Shawn-Hudson Seegraves. Players included freshmen Brandon Palmer and Tyson Peters; sophomores Hayden Blue, Clayton Kemp and Chandler Smart and juniors Cooper Harris and Michael Palmer.
Those recognized with individual awardds included Brandon Palmer for most improved, as he won nine matches his freshman season. Recognized as the distrtict doubles champions, 3A-2 all district and as All-State selections was the doubles team of Michael Palmer and Cooper Harris. They were also recognized for their fourth place finish in the 3A state tournament in doubles play.
Michael Palmer also garnered this year's Maxpreps Player of the Year Award after winning 21 matches this past season.
